Hey guys! Today I’m in Ikebukuro! Ikebukuro is known as a paradise for otakus
and a shopping heaven. It’s a neighborhood that’s especially popular among enthusiasts! Since the station is enormous,
even Japanese people often get lost here. So today, I’ll give you a complete rundown and show you all the charms of this area! It’s easiest to think of Ikebukuro as having two main sides,
the East Exit and the West Exit. Today, I’ll be showing you around the East Exit area! Now, here’s something that even confuses Japanese people: There’s this classic “Higashi-guchi ni Seibu ga ari,
Nishi-guchi ni Tōbu ga arimasu.” problem. What it means is that there are two big department stores, Seibu and Tobu. “Seibu” starts with the kanji for “west,”
and “Tobu” begins with the kanji for “east.” But! Seibu is actually on the east side, and Tobu is on the west side. So basically, the west has “east,”
and the east has “west.” Wha…?! As someone from the countryside, I got lost here
so many times because of this trap! Also, Ikebukuro is currently undergoing redevelopment, so keep in mind the vibe will probably change a lot in a few years! (Starting from 2027, the West Exit area will undergo a massive redevelopment project!) And guys, if Shibuya has Hachiko,
and Ebisu has the Ebisu statue, then here in Ikebukuro, we have… “Ikefukuro”! “Fukuro” means owl, and there’s an old legend
saying owls used to live in this area. Plus, Ikebukuro sounds similar to Fukuro. So it naturally became the neighborhood’s mascot. I want to head to Sunshine City now,
but it’s about a 15–20-minute walk. So I’m thinking of taking the Ikebus!
The red bus stop is its signature look. I’ll take Route A, which departs from the East Exit! Ikebus is fun to ride at least once,
but the buses don’t come very often… It’s like one every hour. So I was like… oh!
One just appeared! I’m taking this one! Ikebus = A small electric circulator bus that runs around the Ikebukuro area. Introduced to help locals and tourists move around conveniently. Eco-friendly transportation 1-day pass: 500 yen (QR payment only) One-ride ticket: 200 yen (cash only, no IC cards) It was super crowded, so I was a little overwhelmed, but once I got on, it felt… kind of fancy (?) Hehe, it’s fun! I’ve arrived at the Sunshine City stop! Bye, Ikebus~ I was honestly
surprised at how healing the ride was. The driver was really friendly too. We chatted a bit before departure, and he said lots of international visitors ride it. because it’s super convenient for getting to the Sunshine Prince Hotel. Sunshine City is way taller than it looks, so filming it is a bit of a struggle—but you can really feel how huge it is, right? Sunshine City = A large complex that opened in 1978, with a shopping mall, restaurants, a hotel, an aquarium, and an observatory all in one place. It’s the landmark of Ikebukuro! Today, I’m heading up to the observatory on the 60th floor! You can take the elevator from the basement level. Look at this beautiful Ikebukuro view… ♥️ I’m so glad I came on a nice-weather day. And suddenly I hear a familiar melody…
wow, sugoi… the piano sounds amazing… They’re hosting a Detective Conan event right now, too. And for an extra 100 yen, you can join the event 😊 Ikebukuro really is an otaku paradise. I’ve been to many observatories, but this one isn’t just about enjoying the view; it’s more like a place where you can sit,
relax, and take your time. There are plenty of seats, and even a play area for kids, so it’s perfect for families! When you travel, rainy days limit your plans, but Ikebukuro has tons of indoor activities,
so you can still have fun even if it pours. Ending the visit with some extra healing from cute babies~ I enjoyed the wide-open view from the observatory! Guys, you saw how high up I was earlier, right?! I’m finally back down on the ground. Right in front of Sunshine City, there’s a street called Otome Road. It’s super popular among female otaku,
so I wanted to show it to you! Let’s walk through Otome Road & Sunshine 60 Street together! There are lots of shops selling anime-related merchandise. There are definitely more women here, and I even spotted some people in cosplay! And you know how this style is trending in Korea these days. They may have characters from
Love Live or something like that, too. “Better than mint chocolate~~ the one and only you!” Haha, doing this alone is kind of embarrassing… You might think, “Isn’t Akihabara the real otaku heaven?” Well, Akihabara is visited mainly by men, and Otome Road is basically the Akihabara for women. Guys!! I finally found a character I know! I couldn’t resist buying a Kuromi hair clip here in Ikebukuro! It’s a bit embarrassing,
but should I try it on? It’s too cute not to… right?! Oh my, this is way too cute to wear only at home. I love it. Wearing clips on both sides might be a bit much…
but it’s cute, so who cares^^~ I’m just gonna wear it while walking down this street! It’s like how you’re not embarrassed to wear Mickey ears at Disneyland Ikebukuro has so many cosplayers. That wearing a cute little hair clip doesn’t feel awkward at all. …But I definitely don’t think I could wear this on the train hahaha Oh~ today’s route is really clean and simple! If you go from Sunshine 60 Street into the side alley behind me, there’s a restaurant I’ve been wanting to try. Oh, this must be it! Pho Thin Tokyo! Let’s skip that part, haha. Go down to the basement, and there’s a kiosk at the entrance. Apparently, this place was selected for Tabelog 2024! You order first at the kiosk and then head inside. While I was waiting, the pho came out super fast 😊 And look at all that beef, now I’m even more excited…! Let me take a bite right away!
And a sip of the refreshing broth…! Oooh, the broth is definitely the highlight. It’s a rich beef bone broth with this amazing roasted garlic aroma. Even though there’s a lot of cilantro in it, the garlic scent still stands out! The soup looks straightforward and simple, but once you taste it, the flavor is so layered. Compared to most places, the garlic flavor is much stronger, making it even tastier! It really feels like a bowl of pho you can’t easily find elsewhere. Normally at pho places,
I end up adding seasoning after a few bites. But here, I actually want to enjoy the natural flavor as it is..! As I kept eating, the combination of green onion and cilantro was just perfect. If there’s a “dream combo,” this is it…!
I’m officially crowning this my #1 pho!!! It’s seriously the kind of taste that pulls you in; you just keep eating. The more you eat, the more impressive it gets… I usually pick restaurants that are comfortable for solo diners, And this one has only counter seats,
so it’s perfect if you’re eating alone No awkwardness at all, just a relaxed meal. And since they don’t have a break time, it’s a great spot to drop by if you have extra time while exploring! This is nuoc mam, Vietnamese fish sauce! Let’s see what it smells like… oh! It’s fish sauce, definitely! What would happen if you add fish sauce
to a clean broth like this? The flavor shifts a little, but it still stays refreshing, so if you want a different taste at the end, give it a try!
Another delicious meal today! Since I didn’t eat anything too heavy today, I could go straight to a dessert shop… but there’s a park I’ve been wanting to visit first,
so I’m going to stop by there! It’s kind of amazing that there’s a park like this right next to such a busy area. Ikebukuro is part of Toshima Ward, and the ward has this goal of “Let’s make Ikebukuro a great place to raise kids!” So there are tons of family-friendly spaces around 😊 Ikebukuro is part of Toshima Ward, and the ward has this goal of “Let’s make Ikebukuro a great place to raise kids!” So there are tons of family-friendly spaces around 😊 Having places like this around really makes you feel calm 🙂 Is there a saying in Korea like,
“If you lie down right after eating, you’ll turn into a pig”? We have that in Japan, and honestly, I feel like I am turning into a pig… but even if I do, that’s okay… I lay down on the grass and just enjoyed a slow, relaxing moment. The café I’m going to, Cha-no-ma,
has branches in Yokohama and Shinjuku too it’s a chain café you’ll usually find in popular areas! It’s especially known for being a place where you can really relax and unwind. Each location has a different vibe, but I think the Ikebukuro one might be the best. The spot I’m sitting in is gorgeous, and the view I’m looking at is beautiful too, so let me show you. Since the space is designed like a garden, it feels like I stepped out of Ikebukuro and into a forest. This place is famous for its terrine cakes. They have matcha, chocolate, hojicha, and more. I ordered the hojicha terrine, which is a menu item you can only get on weekdays! It’s soft, rich, and super creamy… with an intense hojicha flavor. It tastes like all the hojicha smell has been condensed into one slice! It’s creamy and comforting,
like it melts away all the day’s fatigue. It’s pretty sweet, but not in a flat sugary way. The hojicha aroma balances it out, so even adults who don’t love
super-sweet desserts can enjoy it. I’m so happy I found such a good café! It was about a 4-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station’s C1 exit. Can you believe such a beautiful café is this close to the station? For people visiting from overseas, it can be a little tricky to watch plays or performances in Japan, So I didn’t talk about it much today,
but for me, Ikebukuro has a strong theater town vibe. I’ve performed on stage at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre myself, and since it hosts so many excellent productions, I visit it often. With so many cinemas and theaters around, Ikebukuro has a charm similar to places like Shimokitazawa or Hibiya With so many cinemas and theaters around, Ikebukuro has a charm similar to places like Shimokitazawa or Hibiya And this café was such a lovely place to end the day. I’m going to finish my coffee and head out slowly. So, how was exploring Ikebukuro with me today? I imagined Ikebukuro as crowded and hectic. But with a proper plan like today, you can actually have a relaxing, healing time. It’s great for shopping, great even on rainy days, and a lot of people choose it as their base when traveling, too. How about using today’s video as your guide and taking a walk around? That’s it for today’s vlog! See you in the next one!
