Hey everyone! Today, I’m in Shimbashi,
Tokyo’s classic salaryman neighborhood! I actually showed you the nighttime vibes of Shimbashi before, but today I’ll be taking you around Shimbashi during the day, along with nearby Toranomon. It’s been a while since I came here in the daytime,
and it feels super hectic. So many people everywhere! This area is definitely known as a business hub,
and on top of that, it’s really well-connected in terms of transportation. It’s served by four JR lines, the Ginza Line, Asakusa Line,
and Yurikamome Line A total of seven train lines! So no matter where you’re coming from, it’s super convenient to get here. When people think of Shimbashi, I feel like the first thing that comes to mind is the SL Plaza. [SL Plaza] is located right outside the west exit of Shimbashi Station. It’s a famous meeting spot with a real steam locomotive from the 1940s on display. You’ll often see it in Japanese TV shows especially as a go-to place for street interviews with everyday people. I remember hearing in Yokohama and Shinagawa that “this is where Japanese railways began,” but officially, it was the Shimbashi–Yokohama Line that marked the start. Guys, Shimbashi literally means “new bridge” in Japanese. The name’s origin is pretty simple too. There used to be a river here, and they built a new bridge over it. That bridge is long gone, but if you look closely, the pillars are still around you can spot those remains as a small piece of the past. This next spot isn’t just a remnant, it’s a full-on recreation! I’m standing in front of the Old Shimbashi Station, tucked between office buildings.
This is actually my first time seeing it in person. They rebuilt it to resemble the original Shimbashi Station as it looked back in the day. Inside is the Old Shimbashi Station Railway Museum, which commemorates the opening of Japan’s very first railway in 1872.
You can see how the original station looked at the time it opened. They even recreated a short section of track right here, and there’s a special post marked with “0” to represent the official starting point. Japan is seriously passionate about honoring the origins of its railway system. Having places like this preserved makes you feel more thankful every time you take the train. 😊 📍Nittere Tower
Right near Shimbashi Station, there’s a building called Nittere Tower, which is the headquarters of Nippon TV. And while it’s a broadcasting station, what really stands out here is a massive, Ghibli-style clock! Let me show you! Ta-da! It was actually designed by none other than Hayao Miyazaki himself! It’s full of that magical Ghibli charm. This clock moves and plays sound at set times throughout the day, so I might just have to come back later to catch it in action. And at 6 o’clock, the whole thing came to life! The movements, the tiny details…
It was amazing to watch up close. 🥹 And when you look at the map,
Shimbashi is really close to Ginza. To the right is Ginza, and to the left is Toranomon. Since we’ve already featured Ginza a lot on this channel, today I’m heading west toward Toranomon! Alright, I’ve made it to the Toranomon area. You can get here in about 20 minutes on foot from Shimbashi, but today was way too hot… So I took the Ginza Line and made it here in just 1 minute! Toranomon literally means “Tiger’s Gate,” so you’ll find a lot of tiger-themed statues
and symbols around the neighborhood. Haja which refers to the moats built around castles to keep out enemies.

According to the historical marker here, there used to be an outer moat from Edo Castle in this area, and the gate near it was called Toranomon;
that’s how the place got its name. This area used to look completely different back then…
but now, it’s transformed into something totally new! It’s about time for lunch, and when I searched for food spots in Toranomon, I was honestly overwhelmed by how expensive everything looked. But that’s kind of the vibe in this neighborhood, lots of upscale places. Still, today I wanted something affordable and delicious,
so I’m heading to a yakitori place! A Yakitori restaurant called Toriyoshi! Wow guys, this place has such a good vibe As soon as you walk in, you order and pay at the counter first, just a heads up! (Also, keep in mind, it’s cash only!)
I already knew what I wanted: the yakitori donburi! If you’ve been to Tokyo often, this is the kind of hidden local spot you’d probably seek out. But I have to admit, I was a little nervous since it was my first time here. Now that I think about it, I’ve introduced oyakodon on the channel before, but this is the first time I’m featuring yakitori don! Turns out, this is actually a common off-menu lunch item at some yakitori places. This bowl came with a mix of chicken cuts including thigh, liver, tsukune (chicken meatball), minced chicken, and tebanaka (middle wing). This bowl came with a mix of chicken cuts including thigh, liver, tsukune (chicken meatball), minced chicken, and tebanaka (middle wing). At 1,100 yen, it feels like
you’re sampling all the best parts of the chicken. Let’s dig in! This is so good! (The meat just falls apart… so tender!) Tebasaki: the tip of the chicken wing
In Japan, people eat tebasaki a lot. Tebanaka: the middle part of the chicken wing
I haven’t had this cut very often, and it’s delicious! I usually love wings, and this one had more meat than usual, which I really liked. The grilling was spot on full of that smoky charcoal smell😭 What’s also great is that, for a place in Toranomon, the prices are surprisingly reasonable. At night, they offer an omakase course
with 12 yakitori skewers for 3,800 yen. For this neighborhood, this is a good price I had honestly given up on eating in Toranomon, and would usually walk over to Shimbashi to eat. But now that I know about this place,
there’s no reason to avoid eating here. The more I ate, the better it got. The portion size was generous too, I left totally full. Today’s meal hit the spot. Must be all that chicken energy I feel recharged! Time to walk a bit and digest that amazing lunch! When people think of Toranomon, I feel like the first thing that comes to mind is Toranomon Hills. Toranomon Hills is one of Tokyo’s major urban development landmarks, alongside Roppongi Hills, Omotesando Hills, Ark Hills, and Azabu Hills. It first opened in 2014, and with the completion of the Station Tower in 2023, it really established itself as a key business district. 📍Oval Plaza — There’s a spot called Oval Plaza right next to it, and it seems like a lot of people who work in the area come out here to relax on their breaks. Tokyo really is something else!
Every time I come to places like this, I’m just blown away. And actually, there’s someone I really wanted to introduce to you here at Toranomon Hills… It’s Toranomon, the official mascot of Toranomon Hills! I even did a bit of homework to properly introduce him today. But apparently, Toranomon returned to the future on December 31, 2024… He had the cutest official merchandise and statues around here, but now… we can’t see him anymore. That’s honestly so sad. I mean, we’re not going to live long enough to reach the 22nd century, right? So does that mean we won’t see him again? I really hope he comes back someday.
Personally, I’m still not over it… Today, I’ve been showing you around two iconic Tokyo neighborhoods Shimbashi and Toranomon. How’s it going so far?
You hanging in there? As for me… I’m a little drained. I really need a moment to recharge, and there’s a café I’ve been dying to visit. It caught my eye last time I passed by, it’s a garden café, and I’ve been so curious about it. Is this the right way? Café Dining safu. Lunch is available from 11:00 to 14:00, and dessert from 15:00 to 18:00.They serve lunch and desserts here I got here just before 3, so I’m starting with a drink and planning to order dessert a bit later. Let’s go with an iced tea and a dessert set! I picked this seat thinking I’d just relax with a nice view, but now I want to share it with you, Mint crew! Such a peaceful spot with a view of a beautiful garden… Cheers to Shimbashi and Toranomon today! Recharging with a cool, sweet drink… 🔋 Maybe it’s because I’m not a salaryman, but walking around these unfamiliar, corporate-heavy areas really drained my energy. But the moment I stepped into this café,
I was completely moved. When I looked up at the high ceiling, I noticed tiny glowing stars twinkling overhead. When I looked up at the high ceiling, I noticed tiny glowing stars twinkling overhead. It literally felt like I was looking at a starry sky indoors After such a busy, overwhelming day,
this place is giving me pure healing. And now, dessert is here! Since it’s past 3, I could finally order the dessert set and it came with Earl Grey pudding and fresh fruit. Let’s dig in! This looks amazing! You know I’m basically a pudding expert, right?
So I was super curious about how this one would taste. Wow, it’s rich! The Earl Grey flavor is so strong and fragrant. When you eat the pudding together with whipped cream, ice cream, and that black tea taste… It’s like a full-on flavor explosion in your mouth. Pure heaven. *This video is supported by the publisher
Ta-da! Lately, I’ve been reading a book called Tokyo Hideaway It’s written by Japanese author Kazue Furuuchi, and I wanted to introduce it in today’s video because the story is actually set in Toranomon! Tokyo Hideaway is a collection of six stories set in the marketing department of an e-commerce company, hidden deep within Tokyo’s forest of office buildings. Each story follows employees of different generations and ranks as they navigate the intensity of work life while quietly seeking out their own personal hideaways. All six main characters in the book face their own struggles and conflicts, but what really comforted me was how each of them finds a personal, hideaway-like space within the story, a place where they can breathe, reflect, and just be themselves. Personally, I connected deeply with the first character,
Yahagi-san. They’re serious but not the most efficient, and I saw a lot of myself that totally got emotionally invested. It’s full of moments that anyone working in a company might relate to painful, frustrating, It’s full of moments that anyone working in a company might relate to painful, frustrating, but also touching. As I read, I really felt like I was growing alongside the characters. The book was originally only available in Japanese,
but it was recently translated into Korean! And thanks to the publisher, I’m holding a small event so the Mint crew can get a chance to read it too! Check the pinned comment below for all the details. I love sharing thoughts about books with friends,
so I’d really love to hear what you think after reading it. Please leave your impressions in the comments. I’m genuinely so curious about your opinions As for me, this café ended up feeling like my own little oasis.
(This is my Tokyo hideaway now…) Thanks to this book, I was able to spend
some truly meaningful time today. So, what did you think of Shimbashi & Toranomon
with me today? These are areas full of busy office workers, and at first, it all felt a bit unfamiliar but as I kept walking, I found hidden oasis-like spots that made it all worthwhile. Shimbashi especially lights up at night with lively izakaya streets, so if you’re looking for a unique Tokyo experience,
I definitely recommend it. That’s it for today’s video see you in the next one!
