Rinko and Sadako Learning about Japanese history from “To Shine” The Fujiwara clan’s endless power struggle Teiko is an unprecedentedly tragic empress who was expelled from the imperial court and exiled due to the downfall of the Nakaguanpaku family. And behind this was the existence of the Onna-in, Higashi-sanjo-in Shoko, who was comparable to the Emperor and had achieved a status equivalent to that of the Retired Emperor. Let’s take a closer look at what happened to Sadako and Akiko. Fujiwara no Kaneie’s daughter, Higashisanjoin Shoko, although Emperor Enyu had many wives, she gave birth to the Emperor’s only son, Imperial Prince Kaihito (later Emperor Ichijo). The birth of Prince Yasuhito brought great fortune to Kaneie’s Kujo-ryu Fujiwara clan. However, Emperor Enyu disliked Kaneie’s growing power and kept Higashi-sanjo-in under her control even though she had given birth to a prince. Therefore, Higashisanjoin finally became her empress dowager when her son, Emperor Ichijo, ascended the throne. Since Emperor Ichijo reigned for about 25 years after acceding to the throne, Higashisanjo-in wielded power as the Mother of the Nation. Furthermore, her father, Regent Kaneie, resigned from the position of Udaijin (Minister of the Right) and elevated the position of Regent, which had previously been a concurrent position, to its own status. Eventually, Kaneie handed over the position of regent to his eldest son Michitaka, solidifying the power of the Fujiwara clan in the political world. Furthermore, with Michitaka’s daughter Sadako becoming Emperor Ichijo’s central court, the Kujo-ryu Fujiwara clan’s monopoly system was almost established. Shoko Higashisanjoin and Sadako Chugu were aunt and niece, and there were no notable movements during Kaneie’s lifetime. However, after Kaneie passed away in 990, the first year of the Shorei era, the relationship between Higashisanjoin and Sadako Chugu became a delicate one, with Emperor Ichijo as her mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Michitaka’s legal wife, Takako Takashina, was a talented woman who served as a high-class lady-in-waiting to Emperor Enyu. For this reason, Higashisanjoin, who represented the Fujiwara clan, was not happy with Takako and Sadako, as they were seen as contributing to the rise of the power of the Takashina family. Furthermore, Michitaka became Kanpaku and was called the Nakakanpaku family, and he moved to monopolize power by making his eldest son, Ishu, who was only 21 years old, the Minister of the Interior. As a result, the relationship between Higashisanjoin and Michitaka, Takako, and Sadako rapidly deteriorated. Regardless, Fujiwara no Michitaka was popular with the wives of the imperial court because he was handsome and cheerful. In addition, his legal wife Takako was highly educated, so she gathered together excellent wives such as Sei Shonagon and Akazomeemon. Therefore, intellectual court nobles such as Emperor Ichijo, Fujiwara no Kinto, and Fujiwara no Yorinobu came and went under Chugu Teishi, forming a large salon. Higashisanjo-in, on the other hand, was abandoned due to illness the year after her father, Kaneie, passed away, but it received the title of Japan’s first female temple. Nyoin is not simply the mother of the emperor, but also means that a priest becomes involved in politics, which will lead to the future cloistered government. The Inn then became an entity with power equal to that of the Retired Emperor and greater than that of the Emperor. Thanks to Higashi Sanjoin, the family status of her half-brothers Michitaka, Michikane, and Michinaga was raised. After Michitaka passed away, Michikane and Michinaga were able to become his successors because they were brothers from the same mother from Higashisanjo-in. Up until now, the Fujiwara clan had gained power indirectly by marrying their daughters into the imperial family and becoming their maternal relatives. However, if the prince born to that daughter became the emperor, that woman would also be given a position comparable to that of the emperor as a nyoin. In other words, this was the moment when a woman from the Fujiwara clan achieved a status equal to that of the Emperor. Following Higashisanjoin, Michinaga’s daughter, Akiko, also ruled as Jotomonin for a long time and supported the Fujiwara clan. At this time, Michinaga, backed by the financial strength of his wife Rinko, invited Higashisanjoin to live in his residence, Tsuchimikadoden. Michinaga became an ally of Higashisanjoin Shoko and from then on suddenly became active as a leader in the political world. It was against this background that the fifth son, Michinaga, who was backed up by Higashisanjoin, suddenly rose through the ranks without seeming to recognize him. Michinaga gained further fame by marrying Minamoto no Akiko, the daughter of a former minister of the left, at the recommendation of Higashisanjoin. As a result, a power structure was formed in which Emperor Ichijo was sandwiched between Michitaka, Ishu, and Sadako, who were Kanpaku, and Michinaga and Higashi-sanjo-in, the women’s temple, in opposition to each other. However, the spring for the Nakaguanpaku family did not last long. In the spring of 1995, just five years after Michitaka became Kanpaku, he died of drinking disease (diabetes). Michikane, who succeeded Michitaka, also died soon after, so Ishu and Michinaga competed for succession. Even Emperor Ichijo, who had recommended Ishu as his successor at Sadako’s request, fell silent at the sound of the cranes at Higashisanjoin. It was only natural that Michinaga would emerge victorious, having gained the support of his powerful backing, Shoko Higashisanjoin, on his side. Sadako’s older brother Ishu and younger brother Takaie lost the power struggle with Michinaga and were exiled, leading to the rapid decline of the Nakakanpaku family. Sadako, who has lost the support of his father and brother one after another, decides to give up on his own. However, Emperor Ichijo takes Teiko, who is pregnant with his child, back to the imperial court despite the opposition of those around her. As a result, the decision to have the empress, who had been deposed herself, live in her palace became a target of criticism from those around her. In 999, in the first year of Nagaho, the Imperial Palace was burnt down at just such a time, and there was a lot of criticism that this was because Empress Nun had been brought into the Imperial Palace. In the end, Sadako left the imperial court and gave birth to her son, Imperial Prince Atsuyasu, who was followed by the princess. Since there was no question of Higashisanjoin, who also became a monk, staying in the Dairi, it is highly likely that Sadako’s removal was a plot by Michinaga. With the fall of the Nakakanpaku family, a change appeared in the relationship between Higashisanjoin and Michinaga. While Michinaga became the official official political figure as Naikan, Higashisanjoin continued to be in charge of behind-the-scenes politics that brought together the wives. For Higashisanjoin, since the Nakakanpaku family had fallen, it would be more convenient for Higashisanjoin to manipulate Imperial Prince Atsuyasu, who was born to Sadashi, as the crown prince. Michinaga, on the other hand, wants his daughter Akiko, who entered the court, to give birth to a prince as soon as possible. Higashisanjoin wanted Ishu and Takaie to return to politics in order to become guardians of Imperial Prince Atsuyasu, but Michinaga did not allow it. Meanwhile, Sadako passes away after giving birth to his second princess. The following year, in 1002, the third year of Nagaho, Shoko Higashisanjoin also passed away at the age of 40. If Akiko had lived a little longer, Michinaga would not have easily ascended to the position of supreme power. Although there were few major battles during the Heian period, endless power games involving brothers and sisters were being played out behind the scenes.
