$50 million Japan’s Luxury Onsen Ryokan – Kinugawa Onsen Asaya Hotel (full tour)

Kinugawa Onsen Asaya Hotel is a popular Onsen Ryokan in Japan. The VIP room of Hachibankan where we stayed. Full hotel facilities. Dinner at a private dining room. Breakfast buffet. Ruins. Please enjoy. Let’s start from Kinugawa Onsen Station in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. There is a signboard of Asaya(あさや) Hotel.

Let’s go outside the ticket gate of Kinugawa Onsen(鬼怒川温泉) Station. Kinugawa Onsen map. Kinugawa Onsen Station(鬼怒川温泉駅) is at the bottom. The Asaya(あさや) Hotel is located north of the station. There is a bus that runs from the station to the hotel. Let’s go outside the station.

It is said that there were 3.41 million tourists a year during the bubble period around 1990. There are far fewer tourists now. The golden statue of Kinuko stands out. It is a statue with the motif of “devil”, which is said to ward off evil and invite good fortune.

There is a footbath in the square. We will take a taxi to the hotel because the bus time does not match. It takes about 8 minutes from the station to the hotel. The hotel has a horizontally long shape, and there are two buildings, “Shuhokan” and “Hachibankan”.

It seems that there used to be four buildings in the past, but two buildings have been demolished since 2005. Let’s go to the entrance. Asaya(あさや) is a government-registered international tourist inn. There are parking lots on the left and right of the entrance.

This is the entrance. It is written in English as ASAYA HOTEL. The main entrance is located on the 6th floor of Shuhokan. The front is on the right. There is a locker on the left.

There is also a day trip plan, so it seems that we can use a locker at that time. We will introduce the facilities in the hotel later. We stayed in February, and there were Hinamatsuri decorations. In the lobby, the ceiling chandelier stands out.

In 1990, when the bubble was at its height, the Shuhokan and lobby were built at a total construction cost of $50 million with a loan from Bank. Let’s take a look at the lobby atrium. The decorations on the ceiling are gorgeous. Luxurious lobby atrium.

The popular Japanese animated film “Spirited Away” is rumored to have made reference to this gorgeous lobby atrium. We are on the 6th floor now, so we can see what’s going on below. We can see the organ and sofa, but it corresponds to the 3rd floor.

Drinks are available at the machine near the entrance. There is a smoking room. There is an advertisement for Tobu World Square. A miniature park that reproduces ruins and buildings from around the world. We will look at the 6th floor of the lobby floor clockwise.

There is a vending machine and it is good to prepare. We will look at the lobby atrium from the west side. It looks slightly different depending on the angle. There must have been more people during the bubble period. The Asaya Library(あさやライブラリー) is on the 5th floor. We will introduce it later.

Facilities in the hotel are written. Very fulfilling. There is the 13-story “Shuhokan(秀峰館)” and the 7-story “Hachibankan(八番館)”. It is selected as the No.1 of the East Japan in the Onsen Ryokan ranking. It’s a Hinamatsuri decoration. This is the elevator hall of Shuhokan. There are 3 elevators.

We arrived around 13:00, but the shop was not open yet. We will look at the atrium from the north side. I think the best view is from the north side. Many of the photos on HP are taken from the north side. Light comes in from above.

There is a connecting passage from Shuhokan to Hachibankan. Hachibankan will be introduced later. The shop is open from 7:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 22:00. This is the atrium seen from the east side. We may be able to see the elevator better from the east side.

It is also a Hinamatsuri decoration. It is written as “Meiji Kokin Hina(明治古今雛)”. It has won first place in various rankings. Kinugawa and Nikko sightseeing pamphlets are available. It might be a good idea to go to the Nikko area. On the way back, there is a shuttle bus to the station.

At 14:00, the shop opened. At a shop called “Asaya(麻屋)”, the sales ranking TOP 5 is written. Curry rice(カレーせんべい) crackers rank third in sales. Onsen manju(温泉饅頭) is the number one seller. There is a reservation form.

It seems to be made the Onsen manju(温泉饅頭) in the morning, so it seems better to make a reservation and buy it before checkout. This is the Asaya Story(あさや物語), which is ranked 5th in sales. There is Asaya’s special curry(あさや特製 和牛カレー) with the highest sales of the same rate.

They are sold individually and as a set. The 4th place in sales is “Otome no Koigokoro (おとめの恋ごころ)”. It seems that the flavor of white chocolate and strawberry is attractive sweets. The shop is spacious. There are plenty of tea and Japanese sweets. There are pickles. It’s a liquor corner.

It is a stuffed toy of the local bear. They also sell drinks and daily necessities. It feels like a convenience store. Women can rent colored yukata. Umbrellas are sold. There are pottery. The price is ¥ 2,268,000 ($17000), which is quite expensive. The shop also sells pottery. Beauty products are also available.

There were also some beauty products in the public bath. We have time to check in at 15:00, so we will kill time at the tea lounge. It’s a tea lounge. It is long and has chairs and a table.

From the lounge you can see the view of the east side of the hotel. Croque monsieur. Tea, milk, French toast. It is a popular curry rice cracker. We could see the famous ruins from the window.

If we stay in some of the upper rooms, we can use the premium lounge(プレミアムラウンジ). This is a colored yukata rental ticket (色浴衣レンタルチケット). A map of the hotel. Go through the passageway and move from Shuhokan(秀峰館) to Hachibankan(八番館). This is the connecting passageway to Hachibankan(八番館).

Hachibankan was renewed in July 2005, and the corridors are also luxurious. Something is written in kanji. This is the hallway of Hachibankan. The design is different from the aisle of Shuhokan. There is a premium lounge on the 6th floor of Hachibankan. Let’s enter.

Drinks and Japanese sweets are placed near the entrance, and there is a place to sit in the back. It’s not that big, and it looks cozy. We can drink various things such as peach tea. There was a Onsen manju(温泉饅頭) that was in the shop. We can also drink coffee and cafe latte.

There was water and so on. Take the elevator to the 7th floor. This is the passage on the 7th floor. Almost the same as other floors. We stayed in the guest room of Hachibankan. This is the most expensive room in the hotel. The key can be opened manually.

In front of the men’s bath. Although the indoor bath was large, it gave the impression of a common large public bath. We can see the pool from the window on the stairs going to the second floor. There seems to be an outdoor pool in the summer.

We come to the 2nd floor of Shuhokan. It seems that there is a banquet hall. There is a private bath, massage, and bedrock bath on the 2nd floor. This is the reception. Entertainment facilities and bars are located on the 3rd to 5th floors.
