Broken Harmony: China’s Dissidents

Broken Harmony: China’s Dissidents tells the story of Hua Ze, an ordinary Chinese citizen for whom a discovery of corruption led her into a hidden world of dissidents, citizen journalism, police harassment and kidnappings.

Once a mild mannered TV director, Hua Ze discovered that an old friend reporting on alleged corruption after the Sichuan earthquake had disappeared, along with any mention of him online. Following a trail of leads over the great internet fire wall of China, she discovers not just the fate of her friend, but the truth behind Sichuan’s fatal building code violations, a jaw-dropping array of human rights abuses across China and comes to the realization that the entire internet in China is a state controlled fiction.

Hua’s awakening takes her into a new world of dissidents, journalists and human rights lawyers. As she begins her own reporting, pressure from the government is swift, and her world is turned upside down. She is forced out of her job and placed under surveillance. One by one, her new friends are arrested or detained. Phones are tapped and secretive threats and warnings are made. But Hua cannot turn a blind eye to the corruption and she pays the price.

When ordinary Chinese citizens go to extraordinary lengths to fight human rights abuses, the risks are enormous, even life-threatening. Broken Harmony reveals Hua’s courageous acts and willingness to lose everything to fight for justice and the rule of law.

  1. I can never understand why sub titles are in white against a very light background making it almost impossible to read. Won't subscribe.😊

  2. ❤ Seven years ago, persons in power targeted me, surveilled me by internet, arranged for me to be wrongfully terminated & denied unemployment benefits. Now, the time is 5:55 p.m. on a Sunday evening, that I am watching / listening. Have re-posted this on a blog in Tumblr under the name "giannic". Thanks to all involved in the production & uploading of this documentary. 謝謝,這是一本出色的新聞報導。
QUESTIONS: Where is Amnesty International? Do they no longer exist in the world 🌎🌍? Why doesn't PEN help these journalists? Who are the police who brutalized the witnesses? Where are they now?

  3. Whats even more sad is due to chinas history of making not only people disappear, this information will be nonexistent to them as well over there let alone even know this happened. Almost feels like her fight was for nothing over there. But thankfully we all know of and been knowing of how China gets down

  4. I don’t even know how to feel about this… sadly the chinese people are stuck in a cheap labor market that the west keeps pumping with money… if the whole thing stops that means higher taxes for the west and another financial crisis in the world. So for me this seems like today the world only function on moral topics when the cameras are rolling and it’s convenient for the world but when push comes to shove and we as a human kind need to make some sacrifices for wellbeing of other nations we just close our hearts because it endangers our level of comfort.

  5. online censorship in canada has gotten crazy…the newest bill the liberal/ndp coalition is trying to pass is Bill C-63,,,where you can go to jail for life for an undefined hate crime, people can snitch and receive 20k, the person accused won't ever face the accuser, and even if they think you might say something hateful in the future, you can be put in house arrest. The issue is really that it's undefined what hate speech is. This breaks our constitution and charter of rights and freedoms. Trudeau said he loved communist china, and the women in the room laughed, however, it's not a joke. Some wonder if this is to silence those opposed to the government, or those reporting, like independent media

  6. Notice how there’s no mention of the prevailing emperor of China Je Jing Ping with similar forever law like the election of Putin’s 3rd or 4th term in Mother Russia where the same kind of oppression takes place and basic human rights get marginalized for autocracy. FIGHT FASCISM that man said find the right people at the right time not the wrong people at the wrong time, so this doc reveals that one woman’s journey spans different governments that differ on matters of freedom. She mentioned U.S. has problems but as an everyday consumer do we comprehend what Chinese people go through just to clear the firewall, someone in Russia got detained for a scarf with 1984 placed on it at a protest during the rigged election, so much violation of basic human rights in both China and Russia, the two world powers that no doubt make a impression on the 1% who only receive 98% of the total amount of currency in general. Feudal system’s are taking place and instead of recognizing that the battle to control the consciousness of the populace is taking the world down a rabbit hole where light at the end of the passage is insignificant I say to each and everyone of us spanning nations East and West FREEDOM!!!!!

  7. I believe ppl in China don't get angry any more when someone accidentally include them in his picture while capturing sunset.

" It's kinda unfair to bitch on the only camera man whom it's not his job to capture and stalk you there ".

Meanwhile in America, a lady will probably shoot you if you accidentally showed her baby's empty stroller in ur pic., which is empty cos the baby fell of it 20 meters back as mom was busy focusing on her selfie !

  8. This video clearly shows that a bird born in a cage will think flying is dangerous. And will even view other flying birds as not normal.

  9. These Chinese are genuine heroes are heroines, it's easy for me to criticise my government, and I do, but it it not an easy matter for the Chinese.
Though few in China are aware it's a problem, such is the power of generations of propaganda.

  10. Very impressive documentary encouraging all common citizens to have courage to stand up against evils.

  11. they belong to the slums in america

  12. It's truly inspiring to witness individuals like Hua who display such unwavering courage and commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law, especially in the face of tremendous risks.

  13. Look how bad china is… now don't complain when we ban tiktok. We're the government, and we're here to help.

  14. I'm American. I had business partners in…fujian etc. (A few provinces) Over 5yrs. I've had a few interesting conversations but these are some scared people. You have to refrain from certain topics

  15. A good way to move to USA or canada.write articles against government and submit asylum application.

  16. That is what happens when the world doesn’t want to accept that the communism is the same as terrorism. The red killed and continue killing millions of people around the world. Why is not forbidden yet? Ohh.. money.. sorry , I have being naive for a second

  17. Human Rights are even questionable in the United States of America. Just like in China, Police Departments across the Nation are the executers; while the government is still monitoring other countries. Human rights organizations are the worst representation of equality wherever they are.

  18. people must understand after a civil war that killed 10s of millions of people a government, any government will have a level of paranoia against opposition.. If you appose that government you become an enemy of the state….
