【実話】不良少年…逮捕の恨みで豹変…リアルワンパンマンの末路
What if someone died because you just messed with him a little? In August, 2011 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England, Gosh, it’s a pain in the ass. A boy: “Isn’t it a little over the top, just a fight?” In the interrogation room He waited for the police officer in charge to arrive.
That boy was Jacob Dunne. On this day he was summoned by the police and turned himself in. Because it was explained over the phone beforehand that it was not a big deal, He thought he was only going to get a light hearing. And, Police: “You are Jacob Dunne. right?”
Police: “A month ago, you beat up this man in town, right?” The police officer who questioned Jacob presented him with a photo of the man whom he had thrown a single punch at when he had rushed to the aid of a friend in a fight a month earlier.
However, Jacob only punched the man once and fled the scene. So he didn’t think the fight would cause any problems. Yes, my friend was arguing with him, so… A little appalled at the victim for reporting it to the police now that it happened a month ago, Jacob replied so.
And the police officer said, Police: “Jacob Dunne, you are under arrest for murder.” A boy who committed murder with just one punch. What exactly happened on the day that single punch was thrown? And this single punch made the boy into a different person.
Osu! Osu! I have recently been addicted to Momotaro Dentetsu 99. Ken chan here. I have someone whom I want to work some slope magic. Yamiko here. OK, anyway, Let’s play Momotetsu together next time. There is a game called Momotaro Dentetsu, which is like the game of life. I love it so much.
Recently, a global edition of that game was released on SWITCH. How many train stations do you think there are in the world? I have never counted them. I like that guy. You know that guy with the square cut and who takes a lot of money? Oh, that’s “Ginji the pickpocket”.
Ah, yea, Ginjin the pickpocket. Wow, I was taken 500 billion by that guy today. 500 billion? – I would like you all to play it. But this is not a case, so you don’t have to do it specifically. Today I would like to introduce a murder that happened in a town in England.
What a surprise, the boy who caused this incident killed a man with a single punch. I wonder if he was superhuman or super muscular? If you were a regular person, you wouldn’t be able to kill someone with a single punch. We can not even imagine it. This criminal was just a juvenile delinquent.
And this boy got involved in a lot of things with that single punch. What happened on such a fateful day for him? Killer Punch On July 30, 2011 it was in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England. Late that night, at a pub, A few boys were drinking together happily.
A Boy: “It’s a happy day, let’s drink more!” They had gathered to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The boys were in a state where everyone present was completely drunk. It was no wonder, then, that they had already hit several pubs during the day.
While the boys were in a good mood and drinking like this, A Boy: “What? A fight? All right, I’m on my way.” A phone call came suddenly. The boy who got up from his seat was Jacob Dunne. The call was a request for backup for a fight.
And when Jacob went to the location, he found his friend in a standoff with a man. Jacob: “Anybody messes with my friends, I’m gonna kick your ass.” Jacob ran up to the man as soon as he yelled that. His clenched fist, which he was about throwing widely,
Showed that he was quite accustomed to fighting. Who the heck is this boy? In 1993, Jacob was born in the Meadows area of Nottingham, which was considered a particularly unsafe neighborhood. His parents divorced when he was 7 years old. His mother had to support Jacob and his younger brother by herself,
And the family was not very wealthy. His mother worked as a nursery school teacher. But partly because she was an alcoholic, she wasn’t making that much money And that was when Jacob was 14. Doctor: “Jacob is most likely a developmental disorder.” Jacob was suddenly diagnosed as such by a doctor.
He often had behavioral problems at school and was instructed to see a psychiatrist. Jacob’s disorder was a familiar symptom these days, such as the so-called ADHD Asperger’s syndrome. At that time, however, developmental disorders were not as well understood as they are today. Jacob’s repeated problematic behavior after that was smothered by his teachers
And he was expelled from school. Does that mean he had so many violent incidents that he was expelled? We don’t know the details, but he did not seem to have been involved in any violent incidents. It is possible that it could have been something that would not be an issue now.
This is how Jacob stopped attending school at the age of 14. From that point on, he had no interest in working and began hanging out with the local delinquents. For the delinquents of Nottengham, it was a unique unity, where they did bad things but never betrayed their friends.
In an effort to support his friends, Jacob began to fight with them day and night. Having been rejected by the school community, in the unity of his fellow delinquents, he may have found his value. And ironically, Jacob had an aptitude for the world of delinquents.
A Boy: “Thanks, man. We’re seriously unbeatable with Jacob.” Jacob: “Yeah, call me anytime for a fight.” Although he was considered a problem at school, Jacob was athletic and often excelled in sports. He became very strong in fights, and was a prominent figure among his fellow delinquents. However, considering his mother’s low income,
He could not spend years of his life just hanging out with his delinquent friends. However, the solution to this situation was also found in the world of delinquents. As you can guess, Jacob quit school and after a while started making a living trafficking illegal drugs.
Jacob, who eventually got involved in illegal drugs as he was immersed in the world of delinquents. Having used drugs himself while working as a dealer, he had stepped into a stage where it was difficult for him to return to a decent working life. Then, it was on July 30, 2011.
When Jacob rushed to join his friend in a fight, he was confronted with an event that changed his messed up life in an unexpected way. Jacob threw a single punch at the man. The man stepped back and collapsed in place without strength. Jacob: “What? It seems something different.”
Jacob felt a certain discomfort in the way the man fell. Jacob: “Let’s get the hell out of here.” Jacob had a bad feeling about this, so he left the man down and ran away with his friend. How can anyone die from a single punch if it hits the wrong place?
Even though he’s used to fighting, it’s really surprising. And what happened to the man who was punched? about the time he forgot A Man: “Ugh, I feel so bad.” After Jacob fled the scene of the fight, the man who was taken to the hospital was James Hodgkinson. He was a trainee paramedic.
And his suffering was not only due to Jacob’s punching. Doctor: “You’ve been drinking a lot.” Doctor: “I’ll give you an IV for the time being, and you’ll be better tomorrow.” Hodgkinson, who had gone to watch a cricket game with his family that day
It was at a pub he stopped at on his way home that he and Jacob’s friend got into a fight. Jacob’s friend stole Hodgkinson’s brother’s sunglasses, and it is said that Hodgkinson followed him and started a fight. He wouldn’t have normally picked a fight with him.
But he was completely drunk at this time. When Jacob punched him, he fell down in a strange way, probably because he was drunk. Eventually, the doctor told him only to rest and left Hodgkinson’s hospital room. I knew he was still alive. You said he killed the man with a single punch,
But the man was alive at the time he was punched. That’s right. At that time, it was see there wasn’t any damage by the punch, and it seemed to be fine. and it seemed to be fine. It was about a month after that day when Jacob punched Hodgkinson. Jacob: “Hey, what’s up?”
When he was with his friends in town as usual, Jacob responded to a call from a friend. Then his friend said, in a more serious tone of voice than ever before Jacob’s friend: “This is bad… the police are looking into you.” Jacob’s friend: “Someone tipped us off about the fight the other day.”
Jacob: ”The fight the other day? When are you talking about?” Jacob: “It’s not that big of a deal.” Jacob, who had forgotten all about his fight with Hodgkinson, took his friend’s words lightly. A few days later, the police contacted Jacob again at his home, and he reluctantly turned himself in.
At the police station, Jacob was then confronted with a fact that he had never expected. Police: ”The man you punched took a turn for the worse and died afterwards.” Hodgkinson’s strange fall was unmistakably due to his drunkenness. Jacob’s punch itself did not do much damage. Hodgkinson, however, fell on his backside
And hit the back of his head on the asphalt. On the day he was taken to the hospital, he was too drunk to receive a detailed medical examination. The next morning he was found to have suffered a serious brain hemorrhage.
He was in a coma for the next nine days and finally drew his last breath. Since the punch was not the direct cause of death after all, Jacob was charged with manslaughter rather than murder at this time. The sentence handed down was relatively light, 30 months in prison.
However, once in prison, Jacob’s life took a drastic turn after this experience. It wasn’t that his punch was incredibly powerful, but that the victim was badly struck when he fell. I’m sure Jacob didn’t see this coming himself. And what was it about the prison experience that would change Jacob? sense of being victimized
After his incarceration in prison, Jacob often shared his feelings with inmates who were also in prison. Jacob: “I’ll never forgive my friend for selling me out to the cops.” The first thing that came to Jacob’s mind upon entering the prison was anger. We may do bad things, but we never betray our friends.
For Jacob, who had spent his entire life in the unique and close-knit world of juvenile delinquents, his friend’s act of tipping off the police was an unforgivable betrayal. And no one in the prison denied Jacob that feeling. Prisoner: ”You should definitely take revenge when you get out of prison.”
Everyone Jacob talked to was an inmate who had been caught committing some crime. They all understood why he was so angry, having lived in a world of delinquents. In an environment where his feelings were not denied, Jacob steadily developed a desire for revenge against his friend.
Even though it was a coincidence, Jacob was the trigger for the victim’s death. Not because his friend tipped him off, but he’s completely wrong about who to blame. Jacob didn’t intend to kill anyone either, so maybe he was somewhat inclined to blame others. He may have been a little confused in some parts.
And such was Jacob’s experience when he was released from prison and saw a cruel sight. Jacob ended up serving his sentence in 14 months, shorter than planned. And what did he see when he returned to his home? Jacob: “Oh, no, is this kidding?” There it was, a sign for a property for sale.
In fact, after her son was arrested, Jacob’s mother stripped of her childcare license and lost her job. She had to sell the family home because she couldn’t afford the mortgage. As I explained earlier, Jacob’s mother was an alcoholic. The revocation of her childcare license was a direct result of her son’s criminal record.
However, such bad behavior of the mother may have also been the cause. Jacob: “It’s all the fault of the fellow who sold me out.” Jacob: “Damn absolutely… absolutely can not forgive.” From then on, Jacob’s desperate life became more self-defeating than ever. And that was about two months after his release from prison.
Jacob stared at a letter that arrived at his home that day with a serious expression on his face. The letter indeed stated, I don’t know why my son had to die. It was a letter from the parents of Hodgkinson, who had died that day as a result of Jacob’s punch.
My son was a boy who always had a smile on his face and was loved by everyone around him. Why did such a boy have to die? That boy was put through a postmortem examination after his death and we were unable to have a funeral for three months.
Those days were torture for our family. The letter contained an unspoken description of the pain that only the bereaved families of the murders could understand. As Jacob read the letter, tears welled up in his eyes. Jacob: I did something I can never take back.
Since going to prison, Jacob had completely forgotten that there was a victim in that case. In fact, he even thought he was the victim of being tipped off by his friend. I did a really bad thing. Jacob: I have spent my life to this day swearing revenge on the people who framed me.
And spelled out in the letter before him now were the thoughts of the bereaved family who had to suffer hell for an incident he had caused. Jacob gently placed the letter on his desk after reading it and wiped away his tears. No longer did he feel vengeance for his friend.
Jacob: I have to explain to these people in my own words why the incident happened. As a matter of fact, Jacob was proposing a restorative justice system in which the survivors and the perpetrator communicate directly with each other to deepen their understanding of the case.
The letter he received from Hodgkinson’s parents was the first step in that restorative justice process. I’ve never heard of restorative justice before. Victims’ families and perpetrators usually don’t want to communicate directly with each other, right? What kind of thing dares to make them communicate with each other? What’s that?
It is surprising, but in many cases, this restorative justice has been good for the victims, the perpetrators, and the bereaved families. What that means, first of all, is that the perpetrator’s recidivism rate will be lower. So this leads to today’s keyword, About Restorative Justice
Restorative justice is a system in which the victim and the offender engage in direct dialogue and work to remedy the underlying causes of the incident. It’s been spreading mainly in Western countries since 1970. In some cases, the victim, offender, and facilitator proceed together,
While in cases of juvenile delinquency or other community-based crimes, the dialogue may include members of the community. According to a study conducted jointly by the University of Minnesota and the University of Tennessee in the United States in 1994-97,
It’s estimated that juveniles who experience restorative justice have a recidivism rate 32% lower than normal. Moreover, nearly 90% of the victims say they are satisfied with the results, and in many cases, the relationship between victim and offender has improved. Thus began the correspondence between Jacob and the bereaved family.
Through his letters, Jacob proceeded to tell in detail what he had done to his victim, Hodgkinson, that day, or what he had been thinking about in prison. Then, after several months of correspondence, Hodgkinson’s parents asked Jacob this question. Parents: “How do you want to live that life?”
Jacob, who lost himself in the world of juvenile delinquents at the age of 14 and has never done anything useful for society. These words from a bereaved family member who had experienced deep grief brought Jacob to the realization that all he had ever done in his life was to hurt people.
Since then, Jacob’s desire to reintegrate into society led him to challenge the General Certificate of Completion of Secondary Education. After studying hard, he was able to pass the exam with 100% in English, 92% in math, and 94% in psychology. Jacob was such a troublemaker that he was expelled from school, wasn’t he?
He must have worked very hard to get this grade. I think the experience of being close to the victims has changed his awareness that this should not continue this. I was reminded that it is really important to listen to how my actions have affected the people around me.
When he began attending college, Jacob also met directly with the parents of victim Hodgkins. Seeing Jacob, who showed a great deal of change, they said Hodgkinson’s parents: “We will never forgive him for taking our son away from us.”
Hodgkinson’s parents: “Because if we forgive him, our son’s life will seem like it was worth nothing.” Hodgkinson’s parents: “But we respect him for having the courage to tell us about his crime and turning his life around.” Since then, Jacob has used his own experiences to earn a degree in criminology.
Today he lectures at various places, including universities and prisons, where he promotes the rehabilitation of offenders and juvenile delinquents In 2022, he published Right From Wrong, a book about his own experiences in the case.
Jacob: “I’d like to use the proceeds from the book to buy a bus to take the city’s youth out hiking.” Jacob: “I want to sit down and talk to them to tell them what it means to be a responsible adult.”
Jacob, who at one time lost his way in the world of delinquents and became a criminal. He’s now 30 years old, and he’s trying to be the one to guide the boys so they don’t go down the wrong path like he did. Have you ever made someone sad and changed your mind?
