After work, I treat myself to Häagen-Dazs ice cream. Eating ice cream is my happiest time. The other day, while I was eating Häagen-Dazs during a break after filming, I received an email. “Hello, Naoki Saito. Nice to meet you.” “October 10th is Heart Day. And it’s Häagen-Dazs Day.”
“On that day, Naoki Saito, please draw an illustration of your fantasy Häagen-Dazs and post it on Twitter.” What does this mean? I received an email from Häagen-Dazs while I was eating Häagen-Dazs . I felt destiny in it. This time I fantasize about my ideal Häagen-Dazs.
I will draw an illustration of Häagen-Dazs that I imagined. This time I will draw the channel mascot character Nagisa-chan. Nagisa-chan is a cheerful girl who looks good in summer. When summer comes, I want to draw Nagisa-chan. This time I will gather momentum and draw a rough sketch.
Naoki Saito paints the colors first and then draws the lines. That person draws in a strange way. You may have that impression. I am evolving little by little. I have changed the way I draw a little. It wasn’t so much a change, it was a return to the way things used to be.
Lately, I’ve been focusing more on feel than on color accuracy. I draw with expression in my paintings. I often draw line drawings first. This looks like a nonsensical pose. You’ll understand what pose this is in a little while. As expected, the theme this time is Japanese style.
I will draw a scene where Nagisa-chan in a kimono is having fun making Japanese-style ice cream. Nagisa-chan likes sweet foods the most out of the three. There’s a reason for that. Nagisa-chan’s hobby is sports. On her days off, she rides a road bike and rides 100km. She needs sugar.
She usually carries chocolates and candies with her. She has a habit of giving K-chan and Tanaka-chan candy. She is a child who loves sweets very much. I pour a lot of chocolate sauce on her. Nagisa-chan is not good at showing facial expressions. I want to draw a smiling face.
It doesn’t feel Japanese-style if it’s just ice cream. I will add various Japanese style goods. It’s Bon and Japanese sweets. They are Häagen-Dazs lid, wooden spoon, and CHASEN. I add them for atmosphere. It’s ice cream and Japanese sweets. “Does she still eat sweets?” I will mention it. No problem!
She is a high school student. High school students can easily eat up that amount. This time I drew a thorough draft. I trace it as usual. People who see my drafts are surprised and wonder, “Do you draw that many drafts?” The reason is this.
If you draw the draft as accurately as possible, you can proceed with the line drawing without hesitation. This creates momentum in the line. I draw comfortably, focusing on the momentum of the lines. My favorite Häagen-Dazs ice cream is vanilla ice cream.
The taste of green tea is recommended as it is not too sweet. This time I will draw green tea ice cream for this illustration. I have never eaten this. I looked into it. During the 30th anniversary of Häagen-Dazs, a limited edition flavor called Sakura was introduced.
I thought it would be very Japanese if I added that. I will combine the two ice creams to create a Japanese-style parfait. This is the concept for this ice cream. I color. Nagisa-chan’s image color is yellow. She wears a yellow kimono.
I was planning to draw a flashy pattern on the kimono to give it a lively image. In this way, the ice cream that is the main character this time will not stand out. I draw modest patterns. I draw ice cream. Many people noticed this. Ice cream has no line drawings. I’ll explain why.
For sweets and ice cream, if you draw a line first, it will be difficult to adjust the amount. It is difficult to draw the line first. In that case, please draw the color first. You can draw it better if you draw the lines after you have decided on the shape.
Please draw objects in a different way than people. By changing the way you draw depending on the time and situation, you can complement your weak abilities. You can see this by looking at it. Please adjust while checking the color balance. “I’d like to add a little more to this.”
“I’ll erase this a little more.” You can see that I am drawing while looking at the whole thing. The advantage of starting with color is that you can change or add parts while drawing. Once the colors are set, add lines. “Can you draw a line between the colors?” “That seems difficult.”
There are people who think that way. This is not difficult. This is surprisingly easy to do. If you are unable to do so, please try again. Please draw a line like this. I would like to introduce my recommended way to eat Häagen-Dazs.
Have you ever experienced something like this when you bought and ate Häagen-Dazs? “Why? This is hard and I can’t eat it.” “This is expensive and difficult to eat.” “Are you not going to feed a poor person like me?” “You have a lot of pride even though you’re an ice cream addict.”
Everyone has experienced this at least once. That’s completely wrong. Häagen-Dazs is no good if you eat it right after you buy it. If you buy Häagen-Dazs, please put it in the refrigerator. It’s not a refrigerator, it’s a refrigerator. Then please wait 50 minutes. If you forget this, you will be in big trouble.
Set a timer so you never forget this. Please open the ice cream after waiting 50 minutes. The ice cream, which was very hard, now has a slightly softer texture. It’s delicious to eat at this time. Somehow, this feels sweeter than usual. I will explain the reason for this.
Häagen-Dazs contains less air than other ice creams. At first, it will be hard and very difficult to eat. If you let it melt a little before eating it, it will contain just the right amount of air. You can experience the soft texture just like soft serve ice cream.
Furthermore, this way of eating will make you experience more sweetness than usual. If you are interested, please try it. You can experience Häagen-Dazs in another dimension. I ate. A little off topic. From here I will draw the pattern for the kimono.
This time I will not draw a flashy pattern, but a simple pattern called SHIPPOU GARA. After drawing the draft once like this, draw the pattern on another screen. This time I didn’t want the pattern to stand out, so I drew the pattern randomly.
After drawing the pattern, change the screen and add the pattern to the kimono. I continued drawing. sorry. I drew it sloppily. I will draw SHIPPOU GARA a little more accurately. Now I arrange the circles regularly. The previous pattern was rough, so I redrawn it. I often redraw while working.
In many cases, you can achieve the shape you envisioned the second time better than the first time. The first failure is not in vain. I will add a little shine to SHIPPOU GARA to give it a different texture than a kimono.
I draw the Häagen-Dazs logo on the container I’m pouring the chocolate sauce into. This can be done by copying the official logo. I dared to make my own this time. Hand-drawing logos is fun. I start drawing the background. I chose a refreshing green background to make Nagisa-chan’s yellow color stand out.
I will draw the pattern of the Häagen-Dazs lid in the background. I draw a sketch on the lid and draw a picture. The picture looks lonely without anything in the background. I will add a cherry blossom silhouette to the background. I first draw KANOKO MON on the lid in gold.
This is called KANOKO MON because it resembles the pattern on a deer’s back. I draw this. This time’s ice cream is a combination of green tea and cherry blossoms topped with chocolate. This is green tea green. This is cherry blossom pink. Then, combine the brown color of the chocolate.
I like this lid to have a Japanese style feel. The lid part is hidden by Nagisa-chan. Please place it in a position where you can see all the elements you have drawn so far, even if Nagisa-chan is in front of it.
I sometimes display Nagisa-chan and draw the pattern while checking how it looks. Adjust the flowers around this a little. The overall image of this painting has been completed. I will add the shading of the character. At first, I didn’t draw the shading of the character.
I was thinking of adjusting the strength of the shading while checking the overall image. For illustrations with many elements, consider the priority of each motif. Please adjust it according to the density of the line and the strength of the shading.
I thought that if I drew strong shadows from the beginning, the motif I wanted to make stand out would be crushed. I usually draw the shading early on. This time I added the shading last. This time, I will highlight the ice cream. I simply drew the shadows of the characters.
This is the final step. I improve the texture of the ice cream. I’ll make you even colder. I aim to draw in a way that makes people think, “I want to eat this” the moment they see it. It’s the unevenness of the ice cream.
It’s so soft that it melts when you put it in your mouth. Furthermore, I would like to improve the texture of the chocolate sauce on this ice cream. I add highlights and add texture. And I look at the whole picture. “I’ll fix this up a little more.”
“I want to strengthen the shadows here and bring them to the front.” “We’re going to weaken the shadows here and move them back.” I adjusted the context of each motif by adjusting the strength of the shading. This is an illustration of Häagen-Dazs that I imagined.
This is Nagisa-chan’s Japanese-style cherry blossom ice cream topped with chocolate sauce. This is complete. The ice cream comes with Japanese sweets. Some people miss this. This is like a rice bowl. You can’t see it now, but it looks like a parfait all the way to the bottom.
This seems to contain cornflakes and mochi. It’s hard for me to eat this ice cream. Nagisa-chan would probably eat all of this with a smile on her face. I fantasized about ice cream while imagining Nagisa-chan’s happy smile. how was it? That’s ice cream. I enjoy drawing food. This time’s theme was food.
