リオの巨大なクリスマスツリーが夜を彩る!
[Music] Santa Tom here. When you think of Christmas trees, you probably picture snow, pine scent, maybe a cozy fireplace. But in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, they put their Christmas tree on the water, and it’s massive. Every December in the heart of Rio, the city’s lagoon transforms into a stage for one of the most spectacular holiday displays on Earth. A floating Christmas tree that can soar over 280 ft tall. as taller than the Statue of Liberty and it’s completely covered in millions of shimmering lights. The tradition began in 1996 when the city decided to create something new, something that would reflect Rio’s tropical beauty while still capturing the magic of Christmas. Instead of placing a tree in the city square or park, they anchored it right in the lagoon, so the lights reflect perfectly off the water. The annual lighting ceremony is a huge event. Tens of thousands gather around the lagoon with fireworks, live music, and performances, marking the start of the holiday season. It’s not just a local thing. Tourists from all over the world come to see it, making it one of Rio’s biggest holiday attractions. Now, this isn’t just a tree. It’s a feat of engineering. Built on massive floating platforms, it’s designed to withstand winds, tides, and every year it features a new lighting theme. Past themes have included nature, peace, and family with elaborate animated light patterns that dance across the tree. In 2007, the tree was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest floating Christmas tree, cementing its place in holiday history. So, while Rio may not get the snow for Christmas, they created something just as magical. A glowing giant on the water, reminding everyone that the Christmas spirit doesn’t mean cold weather. It just needs light, community, and a little imagination.
