Hey everyone! The breeze is nice and cool,
and the weather is just perfect today. In Korea, this kind of weather reminds people of one particular thing! It’s outdoor dining season! You know those scenes from Korean dramas and movies? I’m here to experience that exact slice of Korean culture myself. I’ll be joining some colleagues from a Korean company to eat delicious food and enjoy some good conversation together. We’ve come to the street food stalls near Jungnang Station! You see a lot of pojangmachas (street food tents) in Korea,
but this one’s set up under a bridge, so it feels kind of special! (Whoa, a real pojangmacha!) Browsing through the menu now… Which dish name catches your eye the most? For me, I love samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly),
but they actually serve samgyeopsal here?! It’s even labeled as one of their best menu items / Oh nice! Do you have any food you can’t eat, Mina? I don’t think so What about live octopus? / Yup! Even the banchan (side dishes) here feel a little different from typical Korean restaurants They serve fried eggs and acorn jelly, which really gives it that traditional Korean vibe! Q. What was your first impression of the pojangmacha (street food tent)? Honestly, it really feels like something straight out of a Korean drama! The most famous area is Jongno, and there are also ones in Gongdeok and Yeongdeungpo, though each area has a slightly different vibe. We came here because the under the overpass atmosphere is really special~ Q. When you saw pojangmacha (street stalls) in dramas or movies, what kind of place did it seem like? It looked like a place where people go to relieve stress from work! And I thought it was the perfect spot for people to grow closer. Especially in dramas, they often set up scenes like that Some people who didn’t get along sit down at a pojangmacha, share a drink of soju, and suddenly become friends.
I feel like I’ve seen that kind of scene a lot! Q. Is there a street in Tokyo that gives off a similar vibe? Yes! There’s a place called Yurakucho Yokocho that’s located under the elevated train tracks. It has a somewhat similar feel to this pojangmacha atmosphere. The shops are small and tightly packed together, just like here.
I think Shimbashi also has places with this kind of mood. But the menus are completely different,
so the overall vibe feels different too. When I tried dipping the ojingeo sukhoe (lightly blanched squid) in chojang (vinegared red chili paste)? Hmm? Is this one that? / Yes! / I thought it was raw sashimi! (Sukhoe = lightly cooked sashimi-style dish, often mistaken for raw) I expected raw squid when I heard “sashimi,” but this is delicious! So sukhoe means it’s been lightly cooked oh, I see! The texture is really nice. Is it tender? / Yes, very tender~ But honestly,
most of these dishes probably aren’t familiar to me. Even just reading the names, I wouldn’t know what they are 😅 If Japanese people came here and tried to use a camera translator, I think they still wouldn’t get it! Should we try it? Translate it into Japanese?
(Looking at the results…) Which one comes out the weirdest? I’m so curious! There’s one that’s funny — “jang” got translated as “organ jang”… what does that even mean?! It was for a gomjangeo (grilled hagfish) dish,
but the translator just picked up the word “jang”… Do you know gomjangeo? / No… is it a type of eel? Sort of! It’s called an eel, but technically it’s not an eel 😂 A friend that looks like an eel? Ah, so that’s what gomjangeo is! Right now, the translation isn’t working at all Maybe it’s because the menu layout mixes both horizontal and vertical text, so the translator can’t properly read it! Q. You’re not a heavy drinker, but are there times when you do feel like drinking? Most people say they drink when they’re feeling down… What about you, Mina? Actually, I don’t drink when I’m feeling down. But when I’m with good people, I do get that feeling

I tried to find the best way to explain it Ei means stingray, and hire means fin. It’s a dish made by grilling dried stingray fins! Kind of like how squid is often grilled and eaten It’s super addictive, and you dip it in mayo. It’s delicious! Second is ume suisho, but this one can be divisive. Suisho means crystal, and it’s named that way because it looks like crystals. The “crystal” part is actually shark cartilage! When you chew cartilage, it has a nice chewy texture, and the sourness of umeboshi (pickled plum)
adds a unique kick. I personally love it but since umeboshi itself is a love-or-hate ingredient, this dish might not be for everyone. It’s a dish you nibble on slowly while sipping your drink! Third is tako wasabi, which many people in Korea are already familiar with, right?! You know about it right?
Ah, that’s actually the one dish I know! It kind of looks like san-nakji (live octopus), but instead of sesame oil, it’s seasoned with wasabi. I think you love it, and that’s why I don’t really have any aversion to live octopus! Ah, that makes sense! But it doesn’t move, after all… It’s one of those dishes you might overlook on the menu if you don’t know what it is but once you try it, you might really like it. That’s why I recommend it!
