(Welcome to Shin Hyunji Series) Hello, Cherries I’m model Park Heejung Thanks so much for having me I have to brag about her for a second When she debuted, (So proud)
she walked exclusively for Louis Vuitton (Louis Vuitton exclusive contract)
She made a fabulous debut with Louis Vuitton That’s not an easy opportunity to land (She’s now even expanding into acting)
Am I right? (Model Park Heejung) (How Hyunji and Heejung become close?)
Back in New York, I was moving into a new place I texted to her, “Can you help me get settled?” “Sure, where’d you move to?” “This building” “Wait, I live in that building too!!!” And just like that, we lived in the same building
for about a year She lived on the second floor,
I lived on the fifth We’d just shuffle back and forth
in our pajamas (The apartment brought them together)
Super close We’ve got a ton of stories Designers, brands, casting directors, hair stylists, makeup artists, She gossiped about all of them Just me? (Shifting the blame) – I was just being a good listener
– (The audacity…) “You’ve been through a lot, Heejung” “Cheers” That was a bit twisted I hope you can clear some of that with your own side of the story today Alright (Debuted on [Korea’s Next Top Model] in 2013 / Debuted in 2012)

Life’s pretty easy, huh? (Bold junior)
This is how the modeling world is Step in without knowing,
and this is what happens (Suddenly remembers to show some respect) I started when I was 16 at an academy I got scolded so much (The K-training era)
“If you walk like that,” “you’ll never be a model!!!” You were there, right? You saw me getting yelled at I got called elephant legs, too (Sugarcoating)
But it’s because of that tough love that we trained hard (Honest take)
I think it’s okay to get scolded a bit Same! (Honest take 2)
People don’t get scolded enough these days Sometimes, a little tough feedback is needed It gives you the push you need For me, (I’ve been through a lot too)
I always turned the lights off at the academy I’d stay that late practicing And I’d go home and buy all sorts of heels There are cheap ones at Dongdaemun, like 20,000-30,000 won that are great for practice I’d buy a pair that was a size too big and practice every day at the basketball court, using the lines I used the underground parking lot!! (We all had our go-to training spots) It’s the best! The lines on the floor help you walk straight As a beginner,
if you don’t have a line to follow, you end up veering off – You need a proper guide
– Exactly And I’d imagine a camera right in front of me, trying to bring out some sass (Just adorable)
I’d even ask my mom to film me (Another flashback)
Back then, every show had its own top pose So I’d practice them and try mid-runway turns (Things you learn and never use)
But you never get to use that stuff Right??? I don’t think I ever used it once
in my ten years There was this one time at Chanel They did this old-school concept (Finally!)
I was like, “This is my moment” – (Pure joy!!!!)
– (Jealous) Sounds so fun! It really was – It was this ’90s retro concept
– Right How do you do a top pose? (Always ready)
Should I show you? Yeah! Say you’re walking the runway, and that spot is the top pose mark These days, you just do a quick turn and go back But back in the day? (Cue dramatic retro runway mode) Like this And also, (Tips from a working model)
here’s the key You’d tilt your foot 45°, angle your body where you want to go, then turn and walk off We trained so hard for that That’s what we learned at the academy (Next crash course)
Now, the mid-turn Let’s say you walk out, strike a pose, and now, you need to turn back Turn the front foot 45° Then turn your body Then fully turn around,
and walk in your new direction We’d train for more than three months
just on this, right? (Memories flooding back)
We did this so much Even though we practiced, we never actually used it in real jobs (Shin Hyunji’s Model Class is over)
That’s it But honestly, back then, we still had shows
like [Korea’s Next Top Model], and magazines were booming But now, it’s all about Instagram, YouTube, and all these new platforms (A whole new world of self-promotion)
We now have so many ways to promote ourselves Back in our day,
you had to physically carry your portfolio We’d scrapbook our magazine shoots (DIY hustle era)
and carry it around Now, most casting comes through DMs (Today, you’re your own brand)
The whole system’s totally changed And people ask me,
“How do I start modeling?” (So many DMs from aspiring models)
But everything’s changed So much (Totally different now)
So I honestly don’t know what to say Work hard on your Instagram…? I didn’t even come from a show like [Korea’s Next Top Model] If you do, sure, it’ll speed things up But even without it, I think you can still make it
if you put in the work These days, (Instagram is important…!!)
using the right platforms might make the path a bit easier I wish they’d bring [Korea’s Next Top Model] back (Same)
Me too! It’s so fun Nothing hits like that kind of dopamine! I actually wanted to audition for it Why didn’t you?? I did, but I didn’t make it It’s my first time telling this on camera Which season? – I applied twice
– Huh?! – Heh…
– Yup! One time, I even… ran into Sora at the audition! No way This is getting juicy (Dopamine level MAXED / Bittersweet) Oh… So I see Sora, and she’s totally shaken, almost in tears Why? I asked her, “What’s wrong?” And she goes,
“You know how I am, right?” She’d just gotten some really harsh feedback – Yeah
– But she tried to smile through it and stay positive, like, “I’m okay, ma’am!” Then she sees me and Sora just starts crying (This was before the audition…)
Meanwhile, I’m about to go in What about you? “What on earth happened in there” (Instant horror)
“that made Sora cry?” – (It was terrifying…)
– That’s what happened (Mental breakdown) I was like, “I’m (not) fine, I’m (not) fine” But ended up winning first place – (You’re still not over it!)
– while I didn’t even make it through auditions (Heejung and Sora are best friends) Sora just… It’s Sora’s fault She shook you up!!! (Frantically trying to recover)
Well, I still made it to New York (Happy ending)
Right In the end, (Everything worked out)
we got to where we wanted to be Sora better see this and give you an apology Just a little one I already told her this story a few times (Same old story)
She might say, “Here we go again” Can’t believe she’s still using that story Not again! – They really need to bring back [Korea’s Next Top Model]
– I know To all TV producers out there We hope you revive [Korea’s Next Top Model]! If it ever does come back, as part of the new generation… (Can’t help but want it)
I could even be the host this time – Right?

I submitted my application last minute (Deadline: midnight)
At 11:59 PM I wasn’t planning to apply, but my mom said,
“What have you got to lose?” and told me to apply (Rushed the application)
So I did (On the audition day)
Everyone had already gone through their interviews And I was the last one They ask you to do a special talent So I went in, “A cruel woman!” (Nodding)
Seriously? (Unbelievable) (Judges: We found our funny gal)
That’s how I got in LOL I did my best – I really gave it my all
– You did well That’s why you didn’t get in Right? (Would’ve tried if asked)
They didn’t ask me What did you do? (I had no choice)
They didn’t ask me to do anything! (Round 2)
At the booth audition? No, round 1 You got cut in round 1? (Nodding)
Yeah (Speechless)
That’s bad… (Oh, come on) (Changing the topic)
Oh! But for the first round, I looked at the judges and thought I’ve got nothing to lose (Eco – [Happy Me])
Just love me the way you do now So you sang twice? (This is news to me) Yeah, there was a second round (Had no clue)
Didn’t know You need that crazy spark in your eye I’ll do anything to impress you!! (Legit audition tip)
Pick me You definitely had that crazy spark They were like, “Anything else you want to show us?” (Dry lips)
“Yes, I do!!” “I’ll show you my boxing moves” “Jab jab! One-two, one-two!” (Intense competition)
Were you picked as the funny girl? She actually was the funny girl I just wanted to show them something (Fully drained)
I’ll stop now (Let’s clink glasses) You’ve both modeled in Korea and overseas Is there a big difference in scale? – Oh, a huge difference
– It’s massive Take Fashion Week, for example If you go to Paris during Fashion Week, everyone there knows it’s happening, even Uber drivers “Traffic’s bad today, it’s Fashion Week” But in Korea? No one knows Seoul Fashion Week really needs a revival That would help local models It used to be a bigger deal, but these days… Phew… (Interest has dropped)
It doesn’t get the attention it used to (Getting serious)
And because of that, (Getting serious)
there aren’t as many opportunities for Korean models Meanwhile, overseas shows (Paris Fashion Week is on another level)
are constantly packed, and the people who get invited (Only the biggest global stars)
the most elite stars There’s a big gap (87-line model crew – Kim Wonjoong, Park Jiwoon, etc.)
Back in the day, 87MM models were super popular – So many fans came
– Totally just to see them Lee Soohyuk, Kim Youngkwang… (Back when models were idols)
They were super popular (Hyunji’s connection to Seoul Fashion Week?)
For me, the last time I did it was in 2019 That was when (One of the most booked models)
I was doing super well internationally As a Korean, (Determination)
I came for the Seoul Fashion Week I did the show back then (2018 Seoul Fashion Week) After that… Seoul Fashion Week kind of… Huh… (Very few shows left now)
It lost steam You’ve been modeling for over ten years Any concerns or struggles you’re facing these days? (No hesitation) There’s way less work now – Really???
– The drop in jobs is huge Huh…? Why are you laughing? Not the answer I was expecting (A very real concern)
There’s no work now For us, the core jobs are runway shows
and magazine shoots (Fewer shows at Seoul Fashion Week)
First off, there are way fewer shows in Korea And now, most magazines feature celebrities If there are ten spreads, (The line between model and celeb is blurry now)
maybe one or two will go to models So, yeah – The job market’s really shrunk
– Totally I wish there were more opportunities (Wishing for a stronger role for models in K-fashion)
for models again (The ultimate solution)
That’s why [Korea’s Next Top Model] is so important Did you ever think about this? (As two modeling OGs…)
“What if we’re the last generation?” “What if the line breaks with us?” That’s why we need [Korea’s Next Top Model] back (Ambassador for [Korea’s Next Top Model]) Talking about all this brings back memories It’s so fun (Nostalgic)
Right? I love reminiscing like this Yeah… We all had our little tadpole days What year was that? As for me… I started living abroad in 2014 And if I remember correctly, (Around 2017)
Heejung started overseas a bit after I did (Real talk for aspiring models)
The number 1 question I get by DM, all the time, is this “How did you first sign with an agency overseas?” That’s the question I hear most Here’s my story In my case, I tracked down email addresses
for foreign agencies, went to a tiny photo studio
in my neighborhood, posed a bit, (Before we had specialized studios)
and sent them my photos The agency replied,
“We like your look” “Send us a video of your walk So I went to the playground near my house – (Right)
– There was a basketball court there I filmed my walk there and sent it in They liked it! (Background story)
They wanted to sign That agency was IMG Models,
my current agency (Got lucky)
Compared to others, I was really lucky Then 3-4 years later, (Shortly after)
Heejung, Hoyeon, and Yoonyoung all went abroad too How did you first get connected to an agency? Well, I already had representation in Korea So I submitted my existing portfolio and walk videos (Already had a strong career in Korea)
Then I met with the overseas agencies who were interested What kind of photos work best? With overseas agencies, they’re super strict about retouching So they’ll see your proportions right away, even your skin and your hair (Basically everything visible)
They pay attention to all of that They also check how original and personal your walk is And honestly, if you look closely, you can see… the confidence Girls like us, we’ve got that fire We had this edge back then – Now, her eyes are 10:10
– Nicer now Back then, they were 11:05 “Hyunji” “This is how you do it” (That burning energy of her early days) And you did a great job connecting with the agency (Mindset is everything)
In Korea, I thought, “Everything will work out” I didn’t worry much But… once you’re there, (Thousands of models fly over thinking the same thing)
reality hits When I looked at her in those days, her eyes were pointing upward Tick-tock, tick-tock I was like, “Heejung!” “You’re eyes are almost midnight!” (Still vivid / Hilarious)
“You okay?!” (Eyes getting higher)
It was you, Yoonyoung, Hoyeon (The rookie models)
Total chaos Have you heard of that Naver Q&A post? – Nope
– Someone asked, “Among current Korean models,” “who has the best face reading?” on Naver’s Q&A section And a comment said, “Shin Hyunji has the softest look” (Should I be grateful?)

my features look soft Honestly, among us? You do look soft Right? With you guys I’m the pocket girl, the cute one Right? (Confirmed cutie)
She always calls me “Tiny girl” (The production team digs up an old photo)
Can we see that closer up? Look at that glaze… – Whoa…
– Your eyes (Intimidated by her past self) So much rage I used to be angry all the time Compared to the other girls, I had less anger I couldn’t have matched that energy I just decided to go with the flow But looking back, that was when I was the most ambitious You had to be hungry for it Now I’ve mellowed out a bit But back then, after shoots, I’d be like, “Hyunji…” “Guess what happened to me today” “Gather up!” “Fifth floor” Then models would gather up at my place, four or five of us People will think we’re gangsters or something “Gather up” Sora, Sohyun, Hoyeon, and everyone else would come to my place and have some wine to talk about it Because you know what? We have to raise our voices so the next generation
won’t go through what we did Back in our day, there were no official working hours But thanks to people speaking up, they implemented a ten-hour limit And if you work over that, you have to be compensated There’s also this! I didn’t even speak English that well But if something unfair happened, I was so fluent (Instant native-level English) Your English improves fast
when things are wrong Exactly!!! Because of that, we were never taken advantage of. “Don’t mess with the Korean girls” Right We weren’t pushovers “You cross them,” (Intense-eyed girls)
“they turn full-on 11:05!” And plus, we already had experience in Korea When something was inefficient, we noticed right away You can tell what’s unfair, so you can speak up “Why isn’t this moving forward?” (Won’t let things slide)
“We’re being delayed” “Why is that?” And if things start moving, (An extra jab)
“What exactly were you doing until now?” Like that! That’s what happens But hey, you said it nicely Because we’re on camera During my very first season abroad, I got a call for the Prada show fitting And back then, Walking Prada? That was the golden ticket Rookie of the season was yours And I got called in to fit for Prada – Wow
– So exciting I went there They told me to come at 5 PM (Already getting hyped) (What’s taking so long…?) It’s 10 PM “Any minute now” 2 AM “Ah…” “The sun’s up” (Next morning)
“It’s 6 AM?” Then they said, “Can you come back by 7 AM?” (First thing they said after 13 hours)
They told me to take a shower and return But I was a rookie This was my moment Of course I said yes I arrived at 6:50 Went home, barely slept, and came back Then they go, “Hyunji, is it okay if we cut your bangs?” And I thought they meant normal bangs, so I said, “Yes” “A great way to change my vibe!” (Anything for the Prada show)
“Of course, yes!” At that point, I still didn’t know
if I’d be in the show But they chopped my bangs Right here Just about ten strands In the end, I did get to walk the Prada show “I’ve officially made it” “I’m proud of myself” So I showered and came out, and my bangs were sticking up like this! Like a baby The girls would say,
“Where’s the Wi-Fi?” They’d point their phones at my hair But honestly, I was proud of that moment If someone saw me with these bangs,
they’d say, “Oh, you’re a Prada girl!” (Lost her bangs but gained confidence)

A badge of honor So I rocked that look with pride (It’s me. Hyunji the Prada girl) Oh, right These days, minors aren’t allowed to work past 10 PM, and overall working conditions have improved Back then, I’d stay up waiting to fit clothes until the middle of the night… But you get cut out You don’t even know
you’ve been cut at first But we know, right? You get that gut feeling “Oh, that one got handed off” “to someone else” You can tell during the fitting How? They do sloppy stitching They barely pin it They don’t pay attention when you walk Usually, they photograph the outfit details separately But if they skip that? They’re just taking a photo out of courtesy And then later,
they’ll try the outfit on someone else But if you look better, then… they might call you back “There was something wrong with the last fitting” “Can you come back in?” That’s what they say That kinda hurts… So frustrating – Suddenly came to mind
– It really hurts When you’re new, it crushes your confidence Doesn’t it? “Maybe I just don’t click” “with this creative director” Thinking that way makes it a little easier I’d get a cup of water and start praying “Please let this designer get replaced” “Please!!!” “Let sales go horribly” (Trying to survive here…)
The casting director needs to get switched out (Suddenly serious)
Just kidding (We’re just kidding, industry folks) When it comes to working abroad, with modeling, there’s a lot of struggle I went with almost no money At first, the agency gave me pocket money (For rookie models)
It’s like a weekly allowance I got a little stipend How did I live on that? (Roughly 130,000 won)
If I remember right, I got around $100 And because I had no savings, I had nothing to fall back on Back then, (A special artist visa)
I was on an O-1 visa, but you have to pay for that And I was staying in a model apartment, so I had to cover rent, too – I was already in the red
– We start in debt (Same for any model who’s gone overseas)
Same for me Since I was already in the negatives, I’d take that allowance and save a bit every week… I’d save 30,000 won at a time After all that, eventually, (Sublease)
I moved into a sublet, And after that, I got a place of my own (From shared housing)
Little by little, I leveled up (Started from nothing and made it work)
Small progress like that helped me stay positive Overseas career only sounds glamorous… Every time I’m asked, “What’s the hardest part of modeling?” during an interview, it’s never the dieting I always say it’s the loneliness You do tend to get lonely more than most I really do When I first went overseas, I didn’t know a single person Back then,
none of you guys had arrived yet And for the first three years,
I was trying to learn English So I avoided other Koreans (Fought a lonely battle…)
Even when they did come,
I didn’t spend much time with them Instead, I was out hanging with American crews, trying to blend in But looking back now, I should’ve just hung out with you guys Don’t say that I would’ve been less lonely That’s how it was… When it comes to models’ faces, are there also beauty trends? Yeah, I think there have always been trends – Really?
– Back in the day, baby-faced models were all the rage Gemma Ward, for example Ah, Devon Aoki! That’s right Round faces And then suddenly, starting with Lara Stone, – you had all the fierce girls
– With strong bone structure Sharp features Like Kyunga, that bold look From what I see now, the current trend is more genderless You know that kind of face? The kind that works with both masculine and feminine looks (The current face trend in modeling)
I think those faces are more favored now – More versatile…
– Yeah, faces that can pull off anything That’s what I think It’s just my personal opinion But modeling really is like… 95% physical competition No matter how nice you are, how good you are at talking, how hardworking… It doesn’t matter All the top models right now all have this aura about them Must be overwhelming
if you’re next to them (Not your average girls)
Hey, I’ve got an aura too! Everyone has a different vibe, so it doesn’t really feel intimidating They don’t have what I have, after all And the ones really aiming for the top shouldn’t eat Back when Hyunji had her bob haircut, I was over at her place all the time She was like, “Hey, let’s absolutely crush this season!” She was so fired up She’d cook for us, like diet meals She’d cook quinoa rice and such Little okonomiyaki-style pancakes made with just cabbage and eggs Yeah, that was good I used to cook a lot of diet meals that felt like regular food So between the two of you, what was the best go-to diet meal? The one that suited your taste! I know mine for sure Tomato stew – Like that detox soup
– Wait! Say that again? Tomato stew (Committed to teasing Heejung)

– Thought it was a different dish I always make tomato stew when I need a quick detox Do you have your own recipe? It’s similar to the usual one, but I adjust the taste If it needs more flavor,
I’ll add curry powder Cabbage, carrots, onions, and beef if you want But if you want it healthier, chicken’s better That still counts as tomato stew? The base is tomato! We call that witch’s soup, remember? Just in case… some Cherries don’t know That used to be super famous
a long time ago People these days don’t know it? They might not No way Witch’s soup is a salad item (?) Salad item?? Staple… Correct it like I did It’s too late for me… Alright We shared some stories from our time together in New York And for our very first guest
on this model life series, we had model Park Heejung with us Thank you so much for being here Now that we’ve looked back on everything, all these memories are coming back This was basically the modeling world version of [Pinggyego] – Exactly
– She’s right… Heejung… I’m tired now Let’s go home I’m worn out Let’s get up Q. Are you tired? Nope That’s a lie Any final words of advice for younger models? Not advice, just something I want to say! If you have a clear desire in your heart, I hope you go for it until the end That’s how I feel People often feel like modeling has a high barrier to entry, so some don’t even try But if you ever see me walking by, you’ll realize I’m actually pretty short You’re on the shorter side, right? Yes, I am That’s why whenever I do a finale walk, she asks if they dug a hole in the runway She just drops into the stage I’m suddenly so short But even so, I just pushed through with grit Even when I went to auditions, I’m not gonna see these people
if I don’t make it anyway, so I’d go, “Hi, I’m Hyunji!” I just did it Even if your body
doesn’t meet the ideal specs, you don’t need to aim
to be like Sora or Hoyeon or Hyunji, Heejung from the start That’s not it We all struggled You only see the highlights in media, which makes it seem glamorous But back at my fifth-floor apartment, we’d cry and get angry It was a whole mess Also, these days, people love Koreans Right?? Even if we’re not fluent, we’re quick to pick up on things We know what the client wants – and do a great job at it

Right? – Can I say one thing?
– Sure You might knock on a door many times,
and it still won’t open Ambiguous talent is what drives people crazy But these days, there’s so much variety So stay open to different paths Try different things But also, give modeling a shot That’s my take I like that – Right?
– Yeah There are a few DMs
that still weigh on me I get a lot of DMs from aspiring models So I’ll check out their Instagrams And sometimes I’m like, “This looks tough…” There are a few like that Self-awareness is important But listen to what Heejung said – Or at least be willing to keep changing yourself
– Exactly If you’re not willing to change your look and wonder why it’s not working, I can’t respond to that DM I’m sorry… A few years later,
a person totally changes their styling and reappears, and suddenly everything clicks (Giving advice is never easy…)
It’s a touchy subject I had my own phase of being unknown She had a long unknown period… I didn’t really make it until I was 25,
so that’s like six years (Endured six years)
About six years where I was completely unknown If I had given up early, I wouldn’t be here right now I would’ve taken a totally different path That’s why I’m always careful When I see younger models, telling them to wait just because I went through that unknown phase (Modeling is an unpredictable field)
feels a little irresponsible So if I were to say anything, I’d say this If you truly believe in yourself, why not… (Don’t be too anxious)
just go for it? Grit! Confidence! To all casting directors out there, keep loving me as you do now As long as you don’t change, the only one who’ll have my heart is you
