Higashi Izu, Akazawa Fishing and Van Camping Izu Peninsula Van Camping Trip Vol.3 We’re departing from Matsuzaki in Nishi-Izu We secured fish with SUP fishing We love Matsuzaki Guru-chan (our cat) is being taken care of by a pet sitter Guru-chan (staying home) 11:00 – We came to have lunch The restaurant parking was full, so we moved to the town parking lot Surprisingly, it’s free for 3 hours A town full of historical charm The soba restaurant we were aiming for House-milled 100% buckwheat handmade soba – Izu Kurama (Matsuzaki) We picked this place based on Google Maps reviews Tatsuo ordered duck seiro soba Umiko had tempura soba The warm dipping broth was incredibly good (Duck seiro soba) We’re soba beginners, but the noodles felt really refined Freshly fried tempura↓ We drank all of it It was incredibly delicious The fact it was full at 11:00 on a weekday proves it’s a top restaurant We got an interesting tip…
The breakwater is temporarily open to anglers Fishing access trial Breakwater meal? On the way back to the car… We made a detour to Nakase Residence, a Meiji-era merchant’s home Inside, it was a historical museum We switched drivers The parking lot was free Thank you We went to the supermarket to buy dinner ingredients We’re totally exhausted Time for some booze The MaxValu jingle 🎵 We moved from Nishi-Izu to Higashi-Izu Matsuzaki → Kawazu → Akazawa We’re heading to a campground Passed through Shimoda City We’ve arrived in Higashi-Izu Tonight’s van camp spot is Akazawa Bay Campground 5,500 yen per night There’s a toilet in the back There’s even a foot bath in the lot (next door?)… amazing What an incredible scenic bath The kitchen area next to the camp site… …was unfortunately out of order (lol) We drew water from the tap in front of the toilet Bad news We had to move because check-in was at a separate location far away We went straight to the hot spring Akazawa Day-use Onsen 1,600 yen entry… expensive! Men and women are on separate floors Totally worth the price – a stunning view from the bath Surprisingly, Tatsuo was slower this time The bath felt like Marina Bay Sands (The water) got fixed? Yeah, it’s working again. Thank goodness. We booked the campground to clean fish, so no water would’ve been a disaster Alright !! Let’s shake off the fatigue Cheers 🍶 Sparkling? Yeah Kuuu! So good Ah, delicious Let’s split up and prep for camp Today’s catch A tent that connects to the car It’s super spacious A bit dirty (lol) Blood-splattered tent lol There’s a small gap here Looks good Spacious Not enough booze We’ll prep all the fish (but only eat one today) Party area complete Joyful dance We forgot to buy rice Tonight, we’ll enjoy sashimi of red rockfish Once the head is off, it becomes quite small
(We’ll use the head for soup later) Chopped herbs and condiments salad The fish Umiko caught yesterday We’ll enjoy them as acqua pazza Mmm Maybe too much? Feels like it’s that kind of foot bath It was another great day Tatsuo is already in dreamland Good night~ Good morning Checking if we can launch the SUP The fishing gear is soaked from the night dew Fueling the outboard motor Testing the engine start The spark plug should still be new All checked Putting on a damp hat… …and a damp life jacket Should’ve left them inside the van… Waves are pretty strong and it’s scary A school of small fish got washed ashore! (Feels like a chance) We minimized our gear due to the waves We’ll launch at the right timing We get on the SUP after the big wave set (which comes every few minutes) Some water got in, but we launched successfully Once we’re offshore, it’s all good It’s a 1.2-horsepower outboard motor We’re aiming for bluefish, just in case Would love to catch a yellowtail amberjack Casting a popper Switching to a minnow No bites Switching to a jig Even though it’s close to shore, it’s pretty deep It’s about 40 meters here There’s a school of small mackerel Since there’s no reaction to lures… We use the secret weapon — sabiki fishing Chasing the school of small fish We drop the hooked mackerel straight to the bottom… Bottom reached! Whoa Something bit Wait Oh As soon as the mackerel sank, it got hit Hah! Live bait is unbeatable One shot! What the heck Huh? A red rockfish? Pretty decent size Once we’re back, we’re feasting on red rockfish Careful not to let the spines puncture the SUP Live mackerel bait is powerful Really don’t want to poke a hole in the SUP Looks like we can reuse the mackerel One minute later Fishing is over Riding the wave back to shore Engine ★ submerged Wait, did it get punctured? I hear air leaking Oh well Umiko is sound asleep Feels like the air is leaking from here Maybe I should stop SUP fishing It gets punctured too easily So happy about the red rockfish Brain spike! It’s an extremely tasty high-grade fish Ah, Tatsuo Good morning~ Oh, are you cleaning something? Wait, you caught something? What did you catch? Red rockfish! Umiko loves rockfish We’re looking forward to eating it back home Since we caught fish, even cleanup feels cheerful This tent feels great We forgot to wash the dishes yesterday… Paying the price for slacking on cleanup It’s another perfect day Let’s have some morning coffee ( ・∇・) Coffee★Milk The Every’s sub-battery is really impressive Originally, this trip was supposed to be one more night… But we’ve decided to go home today We want to see Guru-chan (our cat) soon Since we’re heading home, we can be lazy with cleanup (lol) We toss our stuff into the Every’s cargo area The fishing gear we washed and hung out is dry The benefit of an inflatable SUP is how compactly it folds But the downside is the constant risk of punctures Someone please invent a puncture-proof inflatable SUP Grateful for the beautiful nature of Izu We’ll be back again Ahh~ that felt great We’re making a little detour on the way home To the Macaroni Market in Mishima! We arrived just after their 11:00 opening time! A lovely restaurant also in Odawara and Fujisawa What’s so great about it, you ask… All-you-can-eat bread We skipped breakfast just for this All the bread is delicious. And freshly baked. We’re going to eat a ton Be careful — if you eat too much bread, you won’t have room for the main dish The cheese pasta… is insanely good Here’s the main dish… we both chose seafood gratin The pasta is just too good We finished everything Back home!
