【デっカい社会科見学】スウェーデン特別篇「デっカいバイオガス」
Hello! This is Kageyama Yuka. So, I’ve come to Sweden! Wow! No way, what a beautiful cityscape! Actually, here in Sweden, cars and buses run on food waste as fuel. So maybe there is a wonderful world like a sci-fi movie where waste-fueled cars go to the future. But… What does it mean to run a car on food waste as fuel? Let’s go on a ‘Huge Field Trip’! “Huge Biogas Plant” Sweden Special Edition It’s about a 4-hour drive from Stockholm. We’ve arrived in Jönköping! Hmm? Hello! Kageyama-san! Wow, you’re calling my name.
(Plant Manager Mr. Gunnar) I heard that waste can be used as fuel. Here, biogas is made from bio-waste such as food waste. Biogas? Biogas is gas produced by fermenting food waste. We make renewable energy from about 40,000 tons of food waste per year. (Huge Point 1)
40,000 tons, you say? In addition to food waste, we can also use green waste and livestock manure as biogas. How do they turn them into energy? In this huge digester, microorganisms ferment waste and produce biogas. Microorganisms are excellent! Yes. Excellent! This is the overall view of the biogas plant. In summary, food waste from the city is fermented by microorganisms, and biogas is extracted and refined. Produced gas can be used as fuel for the buses. By the way, let me introduce our engineer, Michi-san. Nice to meet you, Kageyama-san! Oh! I didn’t expect you are there!
(Engineer Mr. Michi) When I eat something good food and water, something related to nature,
I usually feel more relaxed. That’s why I decided to enter this industry. I think making environmentally friendly things is good for the future and for our kids. Our motivation is a little bit similar.
ーThat’s right! It’s wonderful to have a job that is full of fulfillment and dreams. I’ve come to the city. Hi! Kageyama-san! ーOh?
(Bus driver Mr. Lawson) This bus runs on biogas made from food waste. Enjoy a ride with us. Come along! Thank you for having me! By turning food waste into energy, (Huge Point 2)
we are reducing about 15,000 tons of CO₂ per year. That’s good for the earth. (Bus user) Yes, the ride is very comfortable. (Bus user) We use it as a school bus and ride it on a daily basis. I drive a vehicle that runs on biogas, and for example, even banana peels can be used as energy to run this vehicle. But it’s not over yet. The by-products created during the fermentation of food waste are used as fertilizer to help grow crops. (Huge Point 3)
They really use resources as much as possible with no waste. This is a bread made from wheat grown with fertilizer from this plant. Please have some if you like! Thank you, Gunnar! Looks delicious! Turning waste into energy and even into fertilizer. This is exactly an energy of the future. This “Huge Field Trip” really brings about many wonderful discoveries. Look forward to the next one! “Huge Field Trip”
