Being an online public figure always comes with two sides, visibility and vulnerability. You can’t pick one and reject the other. They come as a package deal.
It’s naive to expect that people will shower you only with praise when you’ve made the conscious decision to earn money through exposure and public engagement. If you turn your personal life into content, you also open the door for others to react it, whether you find that comfortable or not.
Every time you share glimpses of your life with the public, be aware that you are inviting a reaction. Every act of openness, from the trivial to the deeply personal, is an unspoken invitation for the public to watch, interpret and comment. That’s how this space works. The problem is, those comments won’t always meet your expectations.
You can control what you post. But you can’t control how others will process, frame, or respond to it. Even if your intentions are pure, people will still project their own experiences, biases or assumptions onto what they see. That’s the double-edged nature of social media: interactive, unfiltered and often cruel for no rational reason.
Especially in online spaces, where empathy is diluted and freedom of speech is frequently weaponized to excuse cruelty. The internet, unfortunately, isn’t a sterile place. It’s chaotic, opinionated crowd, and yes, many of them are hiding behind anonymous, venting frustration or feeding egos by tearing others down.

Hateful comments or harassment can never be justified. But let’s be honest that the internet is not a utopia where everyone is kind and handing out compliments. If you’ve chosen a path that relies on public exposure, expecting every public interaction to be positive is simply unrealistic.
We can't control what strangers type. We can't police the moral compass of millions. Those who are determined to be cruel won't pause for your boundaries. But we can still choose how to respond. And more often than not, the wisest response isn’t to retaliate, but to reflect, to filter what’s worth absorbing and ignore what holds no real value.
Because ultimately, being visible online isn’t just about influence and impact, it’s also about resilience in the face of attention that doesn’t always feel fair.
