남자의 로망 1탄! – 거대 괴수 게임들 [KOR SUB]
Do you like monsters? A being that excited the hearts of little ones along with dinosaurs in childhood! It’s the giant monster Today’s topic is a special feature on video games featuring giant monsters In fact, since there have been almost no giant monster special effects films in the country, we used to find solace in a few special effects movies like Yonggary or the space monster Bulgasari However, for the kids who were indirectly exposed to the existence of monsters fighting against special effects creatures like Godzilla and Gamera from the island nation across the sea, as well as giant superheroes like Ultraman, it became a significant point of interest Moreover, to think that such themes would appear in video games! It was something we couldn’t help but try at least once during that time Games where I could control giant monsters or fight against them I’ve gathered some of those today Now, let’s enter the world of the giant monster game We are departing The Revenge of the Giant Monsters is a top-down style action game produced by Taito It has not been released in markets such as North America, and only the Japanese version exists This game is a thorough homage to Japan’s monster film, Godzilla Players must use levers to control their monsters and defeat the approaching enemies, most of which are members of the Earth Defense Force At this point, one realizes that I am playing the role of the villain As a child, I used to imagine the dream of controlling giant monsters like Godzilla, and on top of that, I can also do bad things! There are two attack buttons; one fires the monster’s main weapon, a laser, while the other can unleash flames over a wide area The laser can be fired over a considerable distance, but the flames can only hit at close range However, since there is a function to eliminate enemy projectiles, you need to use it wisely to gain an advantage in the game Unfortunately, the monster’s movements are incredibly slow, while small enemy aircraft fly around, continuously shooting bullets and attempting body slams If you don’t remove this in advance, you won’t last long before collapsing Wasn’t it supposed to be an invincible monster? If it falls this easily, what kind of Godzilla is this… I remember that the game was so difficult back then that I couldn’t really play it properly King of the Monsters is an arcade-style fighting game with a wrestling concept released in 1991 In this game, players control giant monsters to destroy cities and battle other giant monsters, bringing to life the imagination of kaiju films or Ultraman It’s one of the giant monster-themed games made by Atari, but SNK has turned it into a wrestling action game In a city where humans live, it doesn’t matter how it’s destroyed; two giant monsters or super beings can battle 1:1, and as long as one wins, that’s what counts However, since the basic system is a wrestling game, it can be somewhat divisive But above all, true to its Japanese roots like Godzilla or Ultraman, it expresses its unique charm in the game quite well, making it very enjoyable The playable characters include Zion, inspired by Godzilla, a giant gorilla inspired by King Kong, a giant beetle monster called Beetlemania born from pollutants, a creature named Poison Ghost, which resembles a giant golem-like rock monster called Rocky, and finally, a humanoid giant superhero similar to Ultraman, Astro Guy The appearances of the monsters are diverse, but ultimately the gameplay is the same: you win by depleting the enemy’s health as much as possible and knocking them down to receive a three-count after a pinfall Monsters generally have striking attacks, and after grabbing an enemy, they can apply wrestling techniques Moreover, interestingly, there is an invisible ring on the outskirts of the city that can create a recoil on the rope where the electromagnetic current flows When you successfully use the grabbing technique, a P-shaped ball pops out Every time you eat this, the evolution gauge fills up, and when the gauge is full, the character upgrades by one level In this way, it is possible to evolve up to the second stage Additionally, if you press and hold the basic attack button, you can charge energy, and when activated, you can unleash different charge techniques for each monster King of Monsters 2 is an arcade fighting action game released in 1992 While the concept is similar to its predecessor, it has become a general action game that does not follow wrestling rules The number of playable characters has been significantly reduced, so you will choose one from three characters to proceed First, the monster Zion from the previous game has been upgraded to the stronger Super Zion, and the gorilla monster, which appeared as a giant King Kong motif in the previous game, has become a cyborg mecha and appears under the name Cyber Wu Lastly, the only humanoid character from the previous game, Astro Guy, has been further enhanced and appears under the name Atomic Guy The setting of the game is similar to a fierce battle between giant monsters, but it has become quite ambiguous as the basic rules that existed have disappeared Instead of fighting 1:1 from the beginning like in the previous game, you first eliminate the defense forces while progressing like a belt-scrolling action game, and then a battle unfolds when you encounter a boss However, the enemy boss is not easily caught with grabbing techniques, and if you do get caught, there is a high probability that they will use their technique first, making it quite challenging In the end, the only thing to rely on is the charge technique that also existed in the previous game, and moreover, most of the bosses in the second part are quite fast If the player is charging, it’s common for them to cleverly use their skills to dodge or avoid damage, so if you don’t keep your mental state in check, it can be quite frustrating Since this is not a wrestling rule, pinfalls are not necessary, and you win by depleting the enemy’s health gauge completely Rampage is an action game based on an arcade original produced by Midway in 1986 It was later ported to DOS and various consoles, and there are also sequels While the motif is borrowed from monster movies, if King of the Monsters is closer to the Godzilla series, this one resembles the Hollywood movie King Kong more The game’s story revolves around test subjects from a pharmaceutical company who turn into gigantic monsters due to the side effects of a drug, causing destruction in the city In 2018, it was even made into a movie based on this game concept The characters include a giant gorilla resembling King Kong, a giant werewolf, and a giant dinosaur resembling Godzilla They can climb or destroy buildings and eat humans, which slightly restores their health Humans send vehicles, tanks, helicopters, and other means to attack, while soldiers shoot guns or throw bombs at the monsters, so they need to be careful to avoid getting hit There is a strange thrill in attacking enemies while hanging from buildings and smashing them to pieces However, you need to be careful because falling from a collapsing building while destroying it can significantly reduce your health Playing this game, you can see that Westerners have a very different perspective on monsters compared to the Japanese War of the Monsters is a brawler fighting game developed by Incognito Entertainment and released by Sony for the PS2 in 2003 In Korea, it was released as an action game called ‘Monster Battle Royale’, and it has a vibe that seems to mix Rampage and Godzilla fighting games In terms of having giant monsters, robots, or giant insects rampaging through the city, it somewhat resembles the 3D game King of Monsters Each character has unique ranged attacks and special moves like Mega Crash, and the ability to climb over terrain and buildings makes it closer to Rampage in terms of gameplay, rather than the Godzilla fighting game genre The playable characters are basically 10 types, featuring various monsters that could appear in North American comics, such as dinosaur-like creatures, giant King Kong, robots that seem to be created by mad scientists, giant insects like mantises, and winged dragons There are three main game modes: the Adventure mode, where you select one character and progress through the story in order, Free-for-all mode allows you to choose both player and enemy characters to engage in pure battles, and finally, the Survival mode is where you select one character and try to last as long as possible against continuously appearing enemies In adventure mode, there are boss characters that players cannot choose during the game, and since they launch powerful pattern attacks, understanding their patterns is essential This game embodies a typical B-movie monster special effects concept, and the gameplay itself is simple, allowing battles in settings like cities where humans live, casino towns, or canyons You can also perform various actions, such as climbing onto buildings using the surrounding terrain or lifting and throwing nearby objects or vehicles I think it would be quite a fun game if I wanted to become a giant monster and destroy the human world while fighting against monsters of similar size The domestic version has been officially released with Korean localization and Korean dubbing The Earth Defense Force series is a game franchise that started as a Simple Series for PS2 published by D3 Publisher In the beginning, it wasn’t a game that garnered much attention due to its simple gameplay and system, but starting from the second installment, it was upgraded to a fairly enjoyable game with a substantial playtime for a simple series, which led to it being officially released in the country and gaining quite a bit of popularity for a while The main feature of this game is that players become soldiers of the Earth Defense Force and battle against giant insects, alien spaceships, giant robots, or colossal monsters The gameplay is attractive as you can use various weapons obtained through repeated battles to wipe out enemies Overall, it’s a game with a strong arcade feel, making it enjoyable even for users who dislike complex games The enemies that appear are all much larger than a human, such as ants or spiders, and the ants can launch long-range attacks with acidic liquid from their tails, while the spiders can attack with webs that weaken them These creatures are summoned in swarms without a break, so if you let your guard down for even a moment, you could be surrounded and killed However, if you take them out individually before they come within range, you can easily defeat them with the player’s basic weapon The giant alien robots that appear while progressing through the stage have a design reminiscent of those in the movie War of the Worlds, possessing a tough resilience that makes them difficult to handle all at once, but they can be defeated if attacked from a distance with powerful weapons Additionally, there are various weapons on the field that soldiers can directly board, including tanks, attack helicopters, and hoverbikes, which can temporarily fend off enemy assaults while delivering powerful attacks Starting from the second installment of the Earth Defense Force, you can choose not only ground soldiers but also a female character named Pale Wing Unit, who can glide in the sky using a jetpack She moves significantly faster than regular infantry and can even fly over buildings in emergencies, making her quite useful in various situations However, both the jetpack and weapons of Pale Wing use the same power source, so frequent use can lead to overheating, leaving you vulnerable for a while, so caution is advised In the case of the super giant monster that appears later, its size is about that of a decent-sized building, so it won’t budge with ordinary firepower, which means you’ll have to attack it for quite a while However, just because the monster is big doesn’t mean it’s slow; when it spots a player, it charges at them like crazy, and if there are buildings in the way, it will smash through them with its body, making it hard to evade Hey! Try attacking from the top of the building, you! Ahhh! Mom! It’s scary!! It’s mindlessly destroying buildings? Not to mention, it turns the ground into a sea of flames with its incredibly long-range flamethrower, so the only way to survive is to run far away before it can reach you In short, the concept is that a single soldier has to face off against a gigantic monster like a hill all by himself! As I play, the monster that doesn’t die chases me so quickly that it feels like I’m in a horror game I feel like I’m going to have a nightmare.. Originally, the Earth Defense Force series was a budget game developed for the PS2, but thanks to the popularity of the series, the graphics have improved significantly with each sequel, and from the later installments, the Earth Defense Force characters also fight while piloting giant mechs, showcasing the characteristics of a giant monster genre If you want to experience controlling a defense force like those appearing in special effects films featuring giant monsters such as Ultraman or Godzilla, I recommend this game Primal Rage is an arcade fighting game produced by Atari Games in 1994 Primal Rage is a unique game created using traditional stop-motion techniques based on sketches drawn by animators The design of the produced model itself is quite impressive, so this concept was more than enough to excite North American gamers The unfortunate thing is that due to the limitations of the hardware at the time, the created animations had to be re-extracted as low-resolution pixel images, resulting in significant degradation of quality The game background starts with the Earth becoming so devastated by a meteor collision that it resembles the primitive era, causing humanity to revert to a Stone Age-like existence, while ancient gods awaken from deep slumber and fight each other for their own purposes The ancient gods take on the forms of gigantic dinosaurs or monsters, and they fight each other to protect the tribes that worship them or to claim territory, each with their own distinct appearance In fact, this game is created with a very similar concept and production method to Dino Rex, which was produced by Taito The fact that the protagonist is a gigantic dinosaur-like monster set in a primitive era, as well as the use of lifelike graphics, are also noteworthy However, in the case of Dino Rex, the fighting dinosaurs do not fight on their own but rather battle the opponent’s dinosaur under the control of a trainer, and it is different in that they are real dinosaurs that actually existed, not gods The game system is also quite similar to a typical 2D fighting game compared to Dino Rex, where techniques are activated through button and lever combinations However, the input system for techniques is quite unique and unfamiliar, as it requires players to press the button first and then match it with the lever, which is quite different from the button input systems of popular games like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat at the time, making it unintuitive for players accustomed to traditional fighting games Moreover, the feeling of impact that seems to hit the air and the choppy motion frames… The worst part is that when you get attacked and fall, it looks like a rough design, as you lie in the air and then get up, which personally makes me feel frustrated Nevertheless, thanks to the attractive concept of giant monsters that seem to come straight out of imagination battling each other and the incredibly realistic graphics, it has been quite a hit in the Western market, and related character merchandise has sold well, making it a commercial success However, the elements reminiscent of Rampage, where one devours worshipping tribesmen, along with finishing moves similar to Mortal Kombat and the brutal endings of some characters, suggest that the arcade market in North America at the time might not have been very gender-sensitive Although it feels somewhat different to be called a giant monster movie, it is still an indispensable game, Shadow of the Colossus, especially since it features gigantic statues Originally released on the PS2, this masterpiece game provided a visual shock to players at the time, with its unique direction and dramatic BGM that made it feel like stepping into a movie or animation Of course, the protagonist is human, but I was moved by the sight of him wielding a sword and battling against a massive colossus to resurrect his girlfriend In this game, the colossal statues that appear as bosses move with a level of realism that is on a different dimension compared to the monsters depicted in other kaiju films Of course, there are other games with giant bosses among 3D games, such as the Monster Hunter series and God of War, but personally, I have never experienced the sense of weight and overwhelming presence of a slow and heavy giant like in Shadow of the Colossus The feeling of being overwhelmed by a massive, slow, and heavy presence is something I’ve only seen in Shadow of the Colossus Just because Ultraman appears doesn’t mean it’s a kaiju game So, I will exclude casual games with an SD concept and discuss further The Ultraman series of games, along with Godzilla games, which are the origin of giant monster games, has been leading the genre of giant monster games since its early days Personally, the first Ultraman game I encountered was the Ultraman released on MSX, better known in Korea as Remix, published by Bandai However, the airplane shooting game that appears before the actual game, Ultraman vs. Monsters, was incredibly boring Nevertheless, I remember it being quite popular at the time, as it was a game with a relatively rare theme Even in arcades, it was running in a cabinet form modified from the MSX Later, titles like Ultraman and Ultra Seven were also released for the Super Famicom, and it was a 2D fighting game Interestingly, simply reducing the enemy monster’s health to zero did not clear the game, which I remember being quite frustrating when I first encountered it To defeat the enemy monster, you must select a level 4 special move, like Ultraman’s Specium Ray, when the word ‘Finish’ appears on the screen In short, it’s a kind of fatality concept, and the key point is that if you don’t use it, the game doesn’t end Damn.. back then, I didn’t know this, and it felt like fighting zombies with infinite health! Later, a 3D game series titled Ultraman Fighting Evolution was released on PlayStation and PlayStation 2 It’s a 1:1 battle action style game, and while the first installment was quite simple, as the series progressed, unique fighting systems and various effects were added, and the backgrounds changed to fighting between huge buildings, making the presentation more impressive Of course, in terms of being a proper fighting game, the game’s quality and system are quite lacking It really should be seen as a fan game However, the highlight of this game is definitely the special move animations of Ultraman! Continuously attacking the enemy to fill the gauge allows you to use Ultraman’s unique finishing move, and the more you fill the gauge, the more powerful the finishing move you can activate Ugh.. Ultraman really needs these kinds of finishing move performances to be enjoyable Finally, it’s here! These are the Godzilla game series that best fit the theme of a giant monster There are many Godzilla-themed games released by various platforms and production companies, but here are a few representative works that I would like to introduce Gojira is an action game for MSX created by Bandai in 1984 The subtitle has the grand title of ‘Godzilla vs. 3 Great Monsters,’ but in reality, only three types of monsters appear to fight against Godzilla Including Godzilla, there are exactly four types However, the real problem with this game is not that. It’s just that the game itself is quite disappointing… The game is so simple that it feels like a level of the LCD games we played as kids The first monster, Megalon, digs a hole underground and crawls up like a mole, so it must be dealt with by firing a radioactive heat ray before it reaches Godzilla Moreover, if Godzilla falls into the hole created by Megalon as it rises, it will die instantly, so caution is necessary I mean, is it really possible for the strongest monster, Godzilla, to fall into a hole and die like that? The second monster is the Kumonga, which looks like a spider and emerges from that hole On one side, it sucks in Godzilla with something like a spider web, while on the other side, it fires bullets Like a whack-a-mole game, if you don’t predict where it will come out and attack in advance, it will just run back into the hole, so a proper prediction shot is necessary The last one is the ultimate monster, King Ghidorah! King Ghidorah is approaching while firing beams in three directions from the sky At this moment, Minira, Godzilla’s son, suddenly appears, so we have to protect Minira while simultaneously taking down King Ghidorah However, it turns out that the supposedly powerful King Ghidorah can be killed with just one blast of radioactive heat ray Defeating King Ghidorah will loop back to stage 1 I wonder if this game really deserves the grand title of Godzilla vs the three great monsters, but back then, any Godzilla title was guaranteed to attract gamers I really think it’s Bandai The Famicom version of Godzilla is a strategy action game based on the kaiju film ‘Kaiju Daikessen’ from the 1960s When the game starts, the player controls Godzilla and Mothra on the game board to move them When you reach the checkpoint, a side-scrolling action stage begins, and you must advance to the end of the screen by breaking through enemies and obstacles The Gojira has good attack power, but it can only walk on the ground, making movement quite inconvenient in various ways The flying unit Mos is convenient as it can quickly soar through the sky, but if it gets hit by even one enemy attack, it will immediately crash to the ground, so you need to dodge attacks as much as possible while advancing When you pass through the Malcan area and encounter a boss-level monster, the battle proceeds like a fighting game, where you maintain distance and deal damage with regular attacks By consuming the power gauge to use a special move, you can effectively reduce the boss’s health Especially when fighting boss monsters, nothing beats Godzilla’s charged radioactive breath! However, aside from boss battles, the game tends to be somewhat predictable and boring Since the map section progresses like a strategic board game, I wonder if there was really a need to make it this way as it doesn’t have any particularly special features By the way, there are scary urban legends related to this game among Westerners, so if you’re interested, please search for the game’s title along with ‘creepypasta’ on Google Godzilla: Monster Battle is a fighting game based on Godzilla that was released for the Super Famicom It was developed by Alpha System, and in single mode, you must defeat the other 7 monsters aside from the one you selected, while in versus mode, you can battle against another player in a 1:1 match The monsters that appear include familiar ones like King Ghidorah and Gigan, who are regulars in Godzilla’s universe However, some monsters may cause frustration during gameplay due to balance issues In particular, Mothra flies in the air throughout the match, making ground attacks ineffective, while Biollante has no jumping ability at all Each character can use their own special moves and super special moves, and there is a separate grab button that allows for throwing attacks against opponents The command input system is similar to existing 2D fighting games, making it easy to learn Every time you take damage from an enemy, the rage gauge accumulates, and when it maxes out, you can unleash a super move Each character’s super move has a strong personality, and if you hit the enemy at the right timing, there’s a thrill in dealing significant damage Chogojira is a game released in 1993 for the Super Famicom It is a strategic action game that has a somewhat different concept from the previously mentioned Super Famicom Godzilla: Monster War Interestingly, it features a setting where Godzilla is controlled by humans who have brainwashed him to fight against enemy monsters The gameplay is divided into two main parts; the early movement part progresses like a strategic board game, where you destroy buildings or move while being attacked by humans, and when you encounter an enemy monster, it shifts to a fighting game format However, the battle game part does not proceed like a typical action game; instead, it is staged like a scene from the Super Famicom version of Yu Yu Hakusho When you press the button in time with the gauge, the attack action is performed, and that scene is animated, creating a visual battle Moreover, the available attack actions are triggered randomly, which makes the gameplay somewhat divisive Godzilla: Kaiju Daikessen is an action game for the Game Boy Advance released in 2003, and it is the GBA version of the various Godzilla fighting games developed for different consoles The North American title is Godzilla: Domination, and while the Godzilla series produced for GameCube, Xbox, and PS2 were all made in 3D, the GBA version was created in 2D, featuring pixelated sprites that evoke the nostalgia of classic games Just looking at the graphics, it reminds me of the game King of Monsters made by SNK for Neo Geo In fact, it is hard to say that this game was not influenced by that game, as the graphics and systems are quite similar Although styles like Mothra and Mechagodzilla have been added, the overall number of monsters appearing has decreased I heard that you can connect two devices using a communication cable, making it possible to play multiplayer The game’s difficulty is on the easier side, and perhaps due to low sales, the price of used software is quite high The arcade version of Godzilla is a fighting game produced by Banpresto in 1993 It is one of the many imitators created during the time when fighting games were flooding the market due to the craze of Street Fighter II, and once you play it, you’ll feel the rage gauge filling up like Godzilla It’s a typical game with nothing particularly different just because it’s a Godzilla IP, but the advantage is that I can directly control many of the giant monsters that appeared alongside Godzilla There are two main game modes: one is the VS mode, where you can choose one of the monsters that appear and freely engage in battles, and the other is the story mode, where you can select Godzilla and progress by defeating the monsters that appear in order When you choose story mode, the opening scene that unfolds at the start of the stage is impressive, reminiscent of the title screens from the Godzilla movies of that era Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee was first released in 2002 by Pipeworks Software for the GameCube, and it is a 3D fighting game featuring Godzilla Subsequent versions were also ported for the PS2 and Xbox, and due to the popularity of the overseas version, it was also released in Japan The overseas title for the PS2 version is Godzilla: Save the Earth, while the Japanese title is Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee – The Final Battle for Earth The overall system of the game is quite simple, allowing even beginners who don’t know how to play fighting games to easily control it It’s fundamentally an arcade-style game, where you can destroy surrounding objects and buildings, throw items, and engage in various fun actions against enemies Health recovery items and power-up items that appear on the field can frequently turn the tide of battle, making these side elements quite interesting The system is more akin to wrestling action than a typical fighting game, with the edges of every city surrounded by a green barrier that acts like a ring, causing additional damage if you touch it The adventure mode progresses according to the story, while in VS mode, you can choose various monsters from Godzilla movies to battle against each other However, at the beginning, there are only 6 monsters available to choose from By consistently progressing through the adventure mode, you can earn money, which can be used to purchase additional monsters The monsters that appear are nostalgic for Godzilla fans, and the initial choices include Godzilla ’90, Gigan, Megalon, Godzilla 2000, Anguirus, and Rodan As mentioned earlier, if you save up money to unlock more, you can also choose King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, and Destroyer Huh? In short, this is a grind game, right? If I want to choose the monster I want, I guess I need to work hard and earn some money…? Demi-Human is an action game developed by Tamsoft and published by D3 Publisher for the PS2 in 2004 The suddenly gigantic gravure idol, Futaba Riho, becomes a giant monster and wreaks havoc by destroying the city It’s a rather absurd game where you become a member of the Self-Defense Forces and use various helicopters, fighter jets, and tanks to stop her In a word, it’s Bakage Futaba Riho, who appears here, is a fictional idol character that has made cameo appearances in some games developed by D3 Publisher, and has appeared in various Simple Series due to her popularity But here, she’s just a giant monster that’s close to being a fool… Did she get bitten by a crab and lose her intelligence? The game progresses with a direction that seems to parody a typical B-grade monster special effects film In each stage, the player experiences the struggles of a Self-Defense Force member trying to turn the giantized Futaba Riho back to normal The protagonist, aboard an attack helicopter, first scans the three sizes of the unidentified giant creature to properly identify it… Huh? Why? Why is that information necessary? Hmm… Is it just me, or do the action sequences seem overly contrived, like launching a giant syringe filled with anesthesia like a missile to sedate the rampaging giant Riho? Most of the game is played as a flight simulation-style shooting game, but the controls are surprisingly not great, which makes it quite demanding in terms of patience When Riho, with tentacle aliens clinging to her head, goes on a rampage, she really destroys the city like Godzilla, so you have to attack her head with missiles from an armed helicopter to destroy the tentacles, and you also have to use a tank to attack Futaba Riho, who is rushing to the big city wanting to go home, to buy time for the citizens to evacuate safely Isn’t it about time to admit that you’ve really become a fool? In the final stage, you have to shoot an antidote at Riho, who is brainwashed by aliens and climbing a giant building like King Kong, to shrink her size and defeat the final boss at the top of the building Despite being a grotesque game, it seems to have quite a bit of recognition, perhaps thanks to the character of Riho, the giant monster in a bikini The giant monster game special has ended Did you enjoy it? I believe that the giant monsters and creature or special effects-themed games that emerged today reflect the zeitgeist You could say that it allows you to experience the flavor of the B-grade culture that was so popular back in the day It’s a B-grade flavor, but for those who particularly enjoy it, it’s a taste of nostalgia Personally, I loved monster and dinosaur themes when I was young, so this project was enough to remind me of those memories However, I was quite overwhelmed this time as well, sifting through many monster-themed games to find the gems In particular, some games were frustrating to play, making it a real test of patience Classic games are often quite unfriendly or have bizarre controls due to their nature I wonder how everyone played back then when there was no information available There are a few more monster games that were excluded this time, but let’s just cover up to here for today If I get the chance later, I will gather more energy and come back with a follow-up video If you enjoyed today’s video, please don’t forget to subscribe and like, and if you turn on the notification bell, I will see you in the next video Then, I’ll take my leave See you next time

that was a great video! i like the last game with the beautiful girl as the protaganist!!
