Hachinohe to Tomakomai. Winter Ferry Trip on the Pacific Ocean. Hello! This is the central town of Hachinohe. The ferry departs tomorrow morning. Bus departs at 7:25 am. 30 minutes to ferry terminal $2. Via Hachinohe Station. Let’s look at the ferry route. Departs Hachinohe at 8:45 a.m. Tomakomai at 4:00 p.m.
Arrives at ferry terminal. This building closes in February. New terminal is under construction next door. Take a look at the ferry. Inaugurated in 2012, 150m long. “Silver Princess” Silver Ferry operates with four vessels. Four round trips a day between Hachinohe and Tomakomai. Embarkation procedures at the terminal. Store on the 1st floor.
Restaurant and waiting area on 2nd floor. Restaurant opens at 10:30 a.m. Let’s board. White hull against blue sky. Fine winter weather. To the boarding bridge. This bridge will be retired in February. Into the ferry. This is the 5th floor lobby. The cabin spaces are on the 5th through 7th floors.
To the 6th floor. 6th floor lobby. To the 7th floor. 7th floor lobby. My cabin is a “Special.” Booked online for $90. Comfortable cabin. I’ll take a closer look at the cabin later. 10 minutes before departure. Recliners facing windows. To outside deck. Another ferry aft. Sister ship “Silver Tiara.” Departs at 1:00 p.m.
Outside decks are on the 6th and 7th floors. Sailing soon. Snowy Mt. Hakkouda. Jetty at feed mill complex. Detached boarding bridge. New boarding bridge next to it. New terminal, looking forward to it. Old terminal, thank you. Rampway retracted. Rope takers go to their posts. Waiting to set sail. Sailing. Ropes reeled in.

Hachinohe Port is one of the largest in Tohoku. Numerous factories and warehouses. Ferry out of port. Feed warehouses visible in the distance. Locals call it the “Parthenon.”
North on the Pacific Ocean. Back to the cabin. Let’s take a closer look at the interior. Large window facing the ocean. Two single beds. Lights and switches. Yukatas are for indoor use only. Thick mattress. Calm atmosphere. Mini fridge and tea set. Table fixed to floor. Air conditioner. Washbasin next to door.
Stool under it. Amenities. Two closets. Bathroom. Bathtub installed. It’s sleepy and sunny. Stairwell from 7th floor to 5th floor. Grand bath. Not so large. Good use of space. Mountains of Shimokita Peninsula. Handrail on the wall. Rokkasho village to port. One ferry to starboard. Sister ship “Silver Breeze.” Departs Tomakomai at 5:00 a.m.

Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait, Sister ship “Silver Eight.” 9:30 a.m. Departure from Tomakomai. Arrive Hachinohe at 6:00 p.m.. Afternoon on board. Let’s look at the other cabins. “4-person” $70.

Low sun. The sun shines on Tomakomai. Chimney of paper mill. Tomakomai has a thriving pulp and paper industry. Sailors on the move. To Tomakomai Port. World’s first inland dug-in port. Formative beauty of white lighthouse. One tugboat. Heading out of the harbor. Tugboat base to port. Mt. Tarumae beyond the chimney.
Numerous cargo ships docked. Ranked 4th in Japan in terms of cargo volume handled. Ferry terminal now in sight. Besides the Silver Ferry, MOL and Taiheiyo Ferry in service. 180-degree turnaround before landing. Landing on starboard side. Mt. Tarumae at the bow. Change of direction complete. MOL boarding bridge on left.
In the center is the Taiheiyo Ferry. On the right is Silver Ferry. Slowly moving backward. Rope takers stand by. Bringing the hull to the wharf. Line dropped to the wharf. Tugging the line at the wharf. Rope connected at the end of the line. Rope towed by vehicle. Rope to bollard.
Working in low sunlight. Arriving on time. Let’s disembark. It was a very short seven hours. I wish I could ride more… There were only 5 passengers on foot. There were about a dozen other drivers. Nice weather in Tomakomai, too. Boarding bridge. Connect to terminal 2nd floor. Snow removal by wheel loader.
MOL and Taiheiyo ferries are about to arrive. The terminal is still sparsely populated. Stores and restaurants open for business. Bus timetable.
